911 Transmission Choice
Hi Folks, Newbie here,
At the risk of bringing down the wrath of all Porsche owners, I am looking for some info on transmissions to be used in a non-Porsche. I'm rebuilding/re-engineering an ancient rear engined kit car. It's currently powered by a (dead) Corvair drivetrain, but I'm planning to put a Subaru EG33 in it running through a Porsche 911 transaxle. The easy choice is a 915 trans, but I really don't have room up front for my big feet and 3 pedals. That started me thinking about a Sporto or a Tiptronic. Information past the, "I hate automatics in a 911" level is seemingly impossible to find. You guys seem to be the smartest on the web, so maybe you can take pity on me and help. I'm a retired Mechanical and Software engineer, and pretty hard headed when I want to do something (see http://www.rbgault.com/Corvair_36L for evidence). Questions: 1) The EG33 is rated at 228 lb-ft at 4400 RPM. Can the 925 Sporto handle that? 2) I'm confident (read that naive - possibly stupid) enough that I can make the Sporto work in this application if I have one that was working correctly when it came out of its parent car, and I have all the various bits that go with it. However, I can't find anybody who doesn't think it's a fool's errand to try to control the Tip outside the Porsche environment. The local shop looks at me like I have 8 eyes, and the aftermarket TCU guys just laugh. Does anybody have any suggestions where I could get the control data for the Tip so I could program an aftermarket TCU to run it? I guess I could buy a car, instrument the transmission connector(s) for the data and then sell the car, but that seems a little drastic. Has anybody seen this done? Thanks, Roger |
