13 years of trouble free motoring and now this.....
The sunroof is jammed shut. Opens about 1/2" on one side and grinds to a halt. Luckily, it is stuck shut 'cause it's raining cats. Any suggestions for fixing this? Hope I don't have to undo the headliner.
Damn thse unreliable German cars! Cheers, VC '89 3.2 |

Loads of threads on this but check out the motor coupling first - unzip the headlining and remove the cover panel - you should be able to see what is going on. If the motor runs but the gearbox doesn't turn replace the coupling - cheap and easy job.

Wow, thanks Roy. This is one of the first times I have ever asked anything here and to have it answered in less time than it takes for a Ferrari F1 pit stop is quite an experience.

Both 101 Projects and Bentley tell you to slide the sunroof back a few inches in order to unclip the headliner from the sliding roof panel. I had the same problem you did: the roof failed while shut. You canot remove the sunroof without getting the headliner off first. Get a thin plastic spatula type scraper and insert it into the crack in the front of the headliner. Carefully bend it down and you should be able to pop the headliner clips out of the roof. Do not use a screwdriver, as you will most likely tear the headliner. Once you get the headliner unclipped, slide it back and you can see what you need to unbolt to get the roof out.
Once the roof is out, it is a good time to change the felt strips and the rubber seal at the back of the roof panel. The problem with my sunroof was that both cables had become detached from the guides. I just epoxied them back in, crimped, and reinstalled. Do not put any grease or silicone on the cables. It will attract dirt and cause binding. The PO of my car had done this, and I spent some time with a wire brush, cleaning the hardened gunk off of the cables. The entire sunroof assembly is remarkably simple. Unlike the sunroof of my Audi A6, which is remarkably complicated, with a large number of moving parts that eventually break or fail.
