1990 c/4 engine ping/knock????

I have a 1990 c/4 with about 50,000 miles on it and I need to know if anyone has experienced engine knock with these cars. My car has started to knock at about 4K rpms. Any ideas? I have always used top oct gas. Please help!!

Be careful, sounds like the distributor belt has broken and if you drive the car at 4k rpm or plus you could deep six the engine ! Have someone take a look at the lower dist belt, best observed of course with the lower dist's cap/rotor off.

Good luck

I agree. It is likely that you are only running on 6 spark plugs rather than 12. Pre-ignition firing, or pinging is a classic symptom. Try disconnecting the coil wire leading to the slave distributor (furthest to the left) with the engine running. If your engine idle doesn't change, the belt is broken.

I wouldn't drive it any more than absolutely necessary. Baby it if you must drive it to the shop.

Good luck,

I agree. That sounds like a classic case of a broken distributor belt. Does your car have the vent kit? Has the distributor belt ever been replaced?

I just had the distributor belt replaced on my 92 C2 last week as a precaution. The vent kit was installed at the 33K mile mark, and the car now has 49K miles. I'm looking at my old belt right now, and it looks brittle and has some pretty severe cracking. I wish I had a digicam to post a pic. My mechanic said it would have lasted quite a while longer, but I feel much better knowing I've got a fresh belt in there.

Vertex in Florida sells them from for a tad under $30, have you ever changed one ? It's a bear I've heard. Steve does them at Rennsport Porsche.

I had mine rebuilt by Rennsport systems in Oregon. If you can line up TDC #1, pull and replace your distributor (very easy) then you can ship it off to him for a rebuild. Don't know much about self rebuild though on the dist.

I hate to have to state the obvious but I am sure Wayne stocks them!.
I always shop around for stuff but the cheap stuff, I don't even bother!.
Pelican usually gets my business.

I am confused.
If the belt brakes you need to send the whole distributor for rebuild ? Can't you just put the new one in ? I was just about to replace the belt myself this weekend...
There is a nice step by step procedure at http://members.telocity.com/guerraluis/datamen/distibutorbelt.htm
Is it really that hard to change it ?

from my understanding, the hard part is removing the pin. i believe you need a special tool to press it out, and it is not easy.
