911SC Ashtray (Plus Intro)
 

Greetings. This is an introduction and a questions. First, thanks to you all; moderators and members. I've been a lurker for the past several months as I've searched for a 911. I pulled the trigger on a '83 911SC a few weeks ago and your posts were extremely helpful in preparation.

I recently retired after 28 years in the Air Force and settled in a small town near Fort Worth, TX to be close to my 2 sons. This is my first Porsche.....Always been a Corvette/small block guy. But had to find out why ya'll love your 911s so much. After a week on the back roads, I understand.

The car is pretty well sorted. However, just to be safe I did a little immediate preventative mx -- oil/filter; adjusted valves, new plugs, rotor & cap, air filter, belts, etc. Again, your posts and tech inputs were very helpful...especially in adjusting the valves. Also, I can't say enough good things about Jason at Pelican Parts. He sent me everything I needed to do the initial maintenance. It was all correct and he spent close to an hour on the phone with me. PP has already earned my loyalty.

Thanks for listening. Now the question. Car is missing the ashtray. I'd like to buy one even though they are ridiculously expensive. Problem is, I don't know what the "ashtray" consists of, even after looking at the diagram on PP. I THINK there are 3 parts to the ashtray -- (1) the ashtray itself, (2) the ashtray bracket or holder and (3) the knee pad. Can anyone confirm for me that there are in fact 3 parts. Also, any leads on finding the parts would be appreciated (I've looked at obvious places -- PP, Rennlist, Ebay, Craigs).

Why don't you take a close up pic of what you have in place? This would make it easier to diagnose what you need .

You can disassemble an ashtray into the parts you mention but normally if you buy a used one you would get the entire 'piece' that you need.

They are quite easy to take apart so if you got one that was a bit worn you can easily clean it up and even give a nice light couple of coats of satin black. The kneepad part would just need a clean (rather than paint) unless it is damaged.

I would expect that an ad in the Used Parts forum will return a positive result for you.

Beautiful color! SCs are clearly the best, and yours looks like a good one.

second - nice looking car, post more pics.
- is there a front chin spitter to go with that tail? (hard to see)
- de-ephesise those rear speakers, buy something a little less "in your face" or simply paint them black?
- front wheels look a little offset too far out... again hard to tell in the pic. check the wheel offset, I think on those wheels it will be right next to the valve stem - cast into the wheel (something like 7 on one side and 55 on the other side of the stem - outside edge) - then measure any spacers - post them...someone will let you know if they are out too far.

Nice first 911. Looks well sorted.

For the ashtray, you can post a want to buy (WTB) with a detailed description and you could get a hit. Or you might check the dismantlers (sp?) or old parts resellers -- aase, carrera6, DC auto, etc. Just to name a few. I would call and talk to them and not depend on the inventory of the websites. They each have lots of parts and keeping the inventory correct is a challenge.

Thanks.....Yours and your buddy's 911s look great. I like his Fuch's. Unfortunately mine didn't come with the original wheels.....possibly a future purchase. Don't know about a chin "spitter" but it does have what I refer to as a front chin spoiler (same thing?). Not sure about the wheel widths. I know they are 17s. I took them off when I got the car a few weeks ago to look at the brakes and again to adjust the valves, but didn't check the widths. I do know there are no spacers.

A complete ashtray as removed to dump the ashes and butts will click right into the metal clip at the back. You don't need anything else.
Here's one for $25, you can just use vinyl paint on it to match your dash color.

If not already done, get yourself the Bentley book as weel as the Wayne's 101 Project and How to rebuild your 911 engine even if you dont intent to.

You are only missing the ashtray part, that is it. It does not slide out but move downward. Here is the one from my 83.

JJ: The pics of your ashtray were super helpful...Thanks for taking the time to do that. WRT Bentley and Wayne's, they were one of my first purchases. They're great books. However, I've gotta tell you, the information and help provided by 911 owners on sites like this and Rennlist are invaluable and a large part of why I bought the car. WRT a lift, after backing it off a pair of Rhino ramps in preparation for doing the first valve adjustment, a lift is definitely on the list. Again, on sites like this, I've seen some pretty slick setups using the Bendpak scissors(?) lift. Again, thanks for your help on the ashtray. In the future, I'll try to be a giver (of information) instead of just a taker.

Looklike you are on the right track. Lots of threads on lifts with lots of opinions of which one you should get ; scissor, 2 posts, 4 posts, Max Jack and so on. No matter which one you get, it will be best buy after the car.

JJ -- My French sux, but merci beaucoup! If the pic of white Cab is yours, that's one of the ones that convinced me to go with a scissors lift.....has to be safer than Rhino ramps. Also like the ones that guys have sunk so they are flush with the floor. Just not sure its necessary. And thanks for the lift links!
