SEV Marchal- OEM for 74?
I have taken my alternator out to be rebuilt professionally, and was quoted for 100 bucks. The company will bench test it first to see if it is the root of my electrical woes. However, I first checked with alternators and related parts in Pelicans new parts catalog, and do not see SEV Marchal listed under alternators for 74. In fact, I don't see anything pre-74. Whats the deal?
Is my alternator original? It looks like it could be. Are these notorious and hence I should replace rather than rebuild? If the problem proves to be my VR, can any VR be wired in correctly? I can't seem to find the one that's in my car now. I have a VW bug VR that seems quite similar, and best of all it has a wiring schematic on it so I think I can splice it in quite easy. In fact, we might as well make this the "Ultimate Alternator Thread" while we're at it , however, I've seen enough subject titles use 'ultimate' so I won't use it

Yes, SEV Marchal/Motorola were OEM in '74!
Your regulator should look like this: Here is what the 1975+ 980 Watt SEV/Marchal/Motorola alt and regulator looked like ... if you have an RFI/EMI suppressor like the one between the gray and black regulators, it can be disconnected and removed! They often cause faults in the alternator/regulator circuit! Trying to wire in a different make regulator is a very, VERY BAD IDEA!!!

Warren I have that suppresser on my 77 as well It can be removed?? I just had the alternator rebuilt and don't want to ruin it(it is a marchel as well). My regulater on my 74 looked a little differend as it did not have the 3 prong regulator

Early S Man, I don't have that VR. Mine looks completely different, although seeing yours explains why all the parts stores are selling me the same/similar thing. I'll try to post a pic of mine.

Ben,
Yes, you can remove the suppressor entirely, and plug the connector that went to the suppressor directly into the regulator! Those particular suppressors have been known to short internally and cause symptoms of a bad regulator or alternator!

I talked to the alternator shop, turns out the brush holder is broken! All I need to do is fix that, however, he seems to be having a heck of a time finding what I need. I thought I needed an overhall so I brought it down, I could have just looked at this myself. But, he didn't even try to sell me a rebuilt, says the alternator is in great condition otherwise!
