Gearbox mystery

Hi all,

I bought an older Porsche 911 about a year ago and finally started taking a closer look on the parts. I'm a bit puzzled with the gearbox. It clearly has 901/5 stamped on transmission case and 9282002 as transmission number. Dated 25/67. Can somebody identify this box?

I will send some pictures a bit later.

Thanks!

We need some more info on the car. What year do you believe it to be? Do you know if a previous owner reported to have swapped any transmission parts?

One of the previous owners has definately changed the transmission, since the car itself is -65 and the engine is from -66. Bit of a jigsaw puzzle I would say.....

Car has been with this engine/gearbox combination at least for 15 yrs.

There's a number missing. Either it is 901/05 or it is 901/5x, where x could be 1,2,3 or 4. The 901/5x gearboxes were the factory special ratio boxes. Airport ratio, Nuerburgring, hill climb or fast circuit ratios.

901/05 isn't a special box. It's the usual AFMSX.

A number missing....possibly. Today I've used a magnifying lens and can't find any traces of numbers missing.

Here's a photo of it.

That serial number falls in the range of a 901/52 special ratio box with airport ratios. And only the 2nd one ever made at that...

Thanks Matt for your reply!

I'm just thinking about getting it opened/checked/restored (however it is a functioning gearbox), since I have an extra 911/02 engine to go with it. Nice combination or ......? Any comments?

Any idea of the value (would help me in deciding how much effort/money to put in it)?

Well, the gearbox is a '67 and the engine is a '70 so they really don't have much relevance to each other.

If the gearbox still contains its race ratios (and quite possibly a ZF 904 LSD) then it is worth several thousand dollars unrestored. If you rebuild and restore it you will never get the labor back out of it. But if you don't pull the gear stack out you will never know if the gears are still in there.

I might be interested in the engine. If you are selling shoot me a pm with more details.
