Subtle Feeler Gauge Tricks
 

A few thoughts on these feeler gauges I’m sending out:

1) Some don't like the stiffness of this shim-stock. Well, you can quickly anneal (soften) this stuff. Just hold a match or a lighter under the stock until it turns dark (blue-ish) gray. . . .it turns blue first .

2) Some people like to use a .005 gauge as a “no-go” test. Just to insure they’re not on the loose side. Because this is a good sanity check there does exist “stepped feeler gauges” where the tip is say .004 and the body is .006. Too bad for us though, these won’t work in the tight space of the 911 rocker.
But it got me thinking (. . .always dangerous) . . .Since snipping of the ends of this shim stock leaves a ridge why not just leave part of the ridge for the purposes of a “No-Go” section of the gauge.

I have yet to try the adjusting the vaves with this. . .so half-baked for now :cool:

Very cool! Now wouldn't you quench the heat in a bit of cold water for a full anneal? I used to do this for head gaskets made of copper on the Norton motorbikes.
