Post distributor maintenance

Is it as simple as removing, tearing down, cleaning and re-assembling? I can't seem to find any tech articles to help.

According to the Perma-Tune site I should have 600 ohm's resistance on pins 3&6 of the CDI harness. I show no resistance and am wondering if this is contributing to my idle hunt.

Rob,

You won't find any tech. articles on distributors since the '60s! But, yes, it is very straightforward to clean them ... best to degrease outdoors, then air it out a couple of hours, then bring it indoors for disassembly to a table covered in newspapers, and try not to lose any of the springs that become identified flying objects! If you have play that can be felt between the bushings and main shaft, the bushings probably need to be replaced.

Oh, yeah, that 600 Ohms is what the magnetic pickup coil should measure at the connector on the green cable coming out of the distributor. If it was open, your car wouldn't run!

Thanks for the info and diagram. If I have my terminology correct mine was not open but rather closed. Open would be infinite resistance whereas I measured no resistance or the same as when you touch the leads together.

You have to drill out the pin that holds the drive gear in place.

Bosch has a Re-build kit: Bosch P/N 123-7010-00. It contains a new pin and a variety of washers and spacers.

there is also -- PORSCHE P/N 930 602 922 00 -- I am told this P/N for the crush pins that hold the gear in place, but I have not tried to use buy one.

After reading Ken's post I am now concerned. Is the pin your refering to #31 in Warren's link? Providing that I can drill this out without damaging the distributor, can I just tap the replacement pin back in? Thanks for your replies.

The above link will be very useful since none of the repair manuals make any mention of routine maintenance of the distributor.

the distributor rebuild/cleaning is simple, but you DO need to be careful not to lose any parts. Further, be careful not to lose track of which screw, spring, clip, etc. goes where.

i did NOT drill out the pin holding in my distributor gear. i got a punch and tapped it out with care. it took some time, since i didn't want to just whack the SH**T out of it with a sledge hammer. but i was able to get out the pin and re-use it.

i cleaned all parts off with de-greaser and lubed all moving parts up with a light coating of motor oil. by light, i mean "put some on your finger, spread it around, then wipe off the excess".

Rob,

If you are carefull the pin can be drilled out.

The pin is a snug fit, but it will not stay in place unless the ends are expanded. I used a small press to "crush" the ends of the new pin. Anyway you must use some means to expand the ends of the pin, even if you use the old pin.

I'll probably rebuild my distributor when I have the engine out (soon) for a top end rebuild. I'll probably just drive the old pin out carefully, and I'll probably put a brand new pin back in. It is the bushings that I will be very interested in replacing, so I may just get the Bosch rebuild kit.

No, it is not hard to get the old one out but you do have to be careful not to bend the shaft or distrubutor housing. It is even easier to get the new one in. And if you do not use either the oven/freezer method or the hydraulic press method to install the new bushings, you will probably not be successful.

Wonder if Wayne carries it ?
