Stuck In Reverse

Hey all,

On my way to a routine service, I managed to get my '74 911 stuck in reverse. No matter which position I had the selector in, the car stayed in reverse (even in neutral). Thankfully, I was a block from the shop and was able to get a couple of the guys to come over and look. They were able to get it to the shop (in reverse). The initial thoughts were that it would require a re-build ($$$!).

Has anyone ever had this problem?

Any advice is appreciated as I am relatively new to the 911 world and would like to be able to talk intelligently to the mechanic when he calls to give me the diagnosis.

Thanks!

Most likely, the shift coupler just behind the front seats, in betwen the two rear seats is loose. Mine did this, and I freak, everytime. I adjusted, tightened and away I go!

Hopefully your shop will not charge you, presuming this is what it is.

Good luck.

I agree, check the shift coupler. Jim

remove the backup light switch and push in on the pin that activates the switch until the reverse shaft is back in the neutral position. about a 15 minute job. usually this eventually happens because someone was inside the trans once and got a detent in the wrong position.
