General Altimax HP 15 Tires?

I need to replace my tires for my 1976 911. The original tires on it were 185/70R15s. I think I am going to go with 215/60R15 rear and 195/60R15 fronts. There is a nice selection of tires at this size and it should give me a smooth ride. I am not planning on going to the track with these tires, so I am more interested in comfort. With the 215/60s I should only be about .2% off the original size so once my speedometer is working it will be fairly accurate.

I found some General Altimax HP tires on TireRack for a good price but I have no experience with General tires. Does anyone have experience with these? Of the reviews, the only real complaint I saw was bad in snow which won't be a problem for this car.

195/65-15 tires in the front would give you a diameter closer to the original.

I just went with some Bridgestone Potenza G019 Grid in 195/65-15 and 215/60-15. Installed and balanced at Firestone they were only about $430 for the set. I wanted the 960AS but they didn't have any.

I took the car out for a 100 mile test run and got it up to 95 mph on a curvy road. The tires felt great.

I run the General Grabber HTS on my '04 Acura MDX and absolutely love them. Still quite after 45,000 miles, and enough tread to get 55,000 or so out of them before I replace them with another set. They have been great in the snow and rain; I really can't say enough good things about them--a great tire for the price.

I haven't heard anything about their tires for sportier applications though.

I run General Altimax HP 195/70 14 on my VW Golf and they are incredibly noisy. My tire guy said is because they are directional. They're good in the snow but I still hope they wear out soon. I wouldn't buy another pair regardless of the price.

Wow, that kind of sums it up right there, eh? Looks like bridgestone or something else. I will be doing the 195/65R15 in fronts, the 60 was a typo.

GENERAL*ALTIMAX HP Reviews
Quote:
The Altimax HP balances technology and design to produce an all-season tire for today's high performance sport coupes and sedans.
That's an All-Season tire.

I went with Goodyear GT's (All-Season) 60 series because they are one of the few tires still made in the USA.

Compared to 50 series summer tire ES-100's by Yokohama, they have no stick and hobble around like an air mattress. 50 series on 15" rims look silly, I'm still glad I made the change.

I've had to re-learn how to drive the car at speed.

I do feel safer in the late fall when the temperature cool down, and that's when I do most of my joy driving anyway.

The only General tires I've owned were on my old Geo Tracker. Very smooth when new, tended to go out of balance and get noisier and less smooth with age - but don't they all?

I put some General Exclaim U H P's on mine 2 years ago and have no complaints with them.
205/55/16 +255/50/16 not sure if they still make them or if they are available in your size.
Spirited street use only (no track time on them) and after 10K+ miles they still have lots of tread remaining.

Thanks for all the comments. Given what was said about the Altimax tires, I decided to go with something a little more expensive that I have been happy with in the past. I went with 215/60R15 in the rear, 195/65R15 in the front Pirelli P4s. I have had this in the past and have had no complaints. I get them tuesday.
