Original shift knob color?
I'm planning to refresh/restore the interior of my '88 - replacing some broken parts, re-dying the seats & door pockets where they're worn, seals, sills, etc.
The car currently has a Nardi shift knob, and I'd like to take it back to the stock G50 shift knob. Problem is, I have no idea what the stock color was. I believe that the car has Linen (1WY) seats and shift boot and a Marine Blue (8KY) wheel, dash, and carpet. If anyone has an identical interior that they can work from, the options sticker lists the color code as HR, but I have yet to find a decoder that shows what this consists of. These pictures are the best that I have on-hand: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1343232649.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1343232665.jpg Black (1AJ) might look OK, and is easy to find NOS. However, I would love to know what shipped with my color combo and see if I can find one NOS, or even re-dye a black one. Any insight? |
the stock knob would be leather, and match the color of the shift boot

I'll see if my local Porsche parts dept can find me an original. Otherwise, I'll buy a black one from our host and re-dye it with my seats this winter. |
I think the linen ones are still available. If not new, I see used ones pop up every now and then.
But yeah, if you are redying your seats, I think you can redye a black one. That's a very light color to put over black, but with enough layers it probably can be done. Love your interior color combo, by the way! |
FYI - the little plastic insert for the stock shift knob is not available from Pelican.
I am referring to the shifter emblem, that shows the shift pattern. |
Update: I stopped at my local Porsche dealer and talked to the guys in their parts department. They were super cool, and even offered to run my VIN to verify the color code. Indeed, the color code was as McLovin suggested.
They ran a search on the part and it is not available anywhere in the US in my color code, but he offered to send the order to Porsche AG. He suggested that they would either find the part NOS or possibly fabricate it for me - all for retail price. The only downside is time. He said it would take anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months. It's worth a shot, given that I don't plan to do the re-dye until this winter anyway. The shifter just seemed like a low-hanging fruit. Whether I get a new part from Porsche or re-dye a black one, I'll update this thread. Thanks again, all! |

EDIT: I just noticed my auto UNcorrect error on my post. I don't even recall what I was trying to say. Friggin iPhone... |

I was able to locate them - it's listed as available from Pelican. PCNA was also excited to locate one for me when they saw my list. The emblems and other associated hardware seem to be readily available from a number of sources. Still looking forward to finding out what happens with that knob. If I can't find one, doing the re-dye myself will be a neat project. |
What??!! I just had a long conversation with Pelican
Here was my order response: 950-424-120-00-OEM Shifter Emblem, 911 Carrera (1987-89), Brand: Genuine PORSCHE*** NO STOCK |
Canada Kev - if you find the extra G50 plastic emblem in black, I am interested.

I have an extra one in black, that my mommy painted the numerals and shift gate pattern red, then clear/gloss coated it for me. What can I say, my mom likes crafts & painting...... :D You're welcome to it if you want it. |
:-) I think I'll wait for a plain black one - but thanks anyway
|
Yeah, I could have sworn I had an extra, but took a look and I can't seem to find it. It's kinda weird as on the items that don't cost a small fortune, I usually buy more than I need. You never know when you'll need another. If I run across it in the next few days, I'll shoot you a message and you can have it.
I took a look and Pelican shows four days to ship and they only cost a couple bucks (Pelican Parts.com - Add to Shopping Cart), so maybe give that another shot. And get yourself an extra (or two). When you pry them out, they can get easily damaged. I kinda did on mine, at least. |
I just saw an '88 in the for sale section, and I figured your interior and shift knob would probably look very similar, but with blue carpet, obviously...

If I can't find a linen one, I'll buy black and see how it looks and redye it with the seats. Thanks again! |
