rumble from the back...wheel bearing?

I drove an '87 w/120K on it today. Not a bad car, but there are a few minor cosmetics, torn cv boot, a few oil leaks, and I suspect the throwout bearing is going. I also noticed a rumbling sound from the rear of the car when coasting with the clutch in. It didn't change when going around corners, and was speed dependent. I'm thinking wheel bearings (having just replaced front and rear in my 115K miles 4-runner). Does that sound reasonable? A PPI will tell me for sure, but that will have to wait a week or so until after the move.

Had the same thing on my 72 model. Changed out the rear hub assy with a used one and it went away... drove me crazy until I did it. Assume that it was the bearing.

Well, since it has a torn CV boot, I would speculate that the CV joint is letting you know how unhappy it is without any grease! It could also be the hub/bearing as Joe said.

Those demanding CV joints...always complaining. Back when I had to ensure continuous velocity, we went without grease for months...and we liked it! In fact, I believe it snowed most of the time and we had to drive uphill both ways.
