Battery question (yet another one)

I know this must have been asked several times, Search revealed no answer.

What battery should I put into a '71 911T.

I am bringing one out of storage and the
battery in it is flat dead. It was a yellow top optima with the negative post cut off the top and moved to the side. Didn't look very safe to me.

I do want ot go with a single battery and this car is littered with radio equipment, alarm, dvd player, lights bells and whistles!

The smuggler box is filled with a/c stuff so it must fit in the left side battery box.

If this question has been answered in a prior post, pleas point me toward it.

Thanks in advance.

Scott

I know I've spent stupid money on batteries... I won't suggest any particular one but get something sealed.
The high end ones are all much the same but according to some people here, Optima aren't what they used to be.

I use Oddesys in both my cars and I'm happy with them. The main reason I went with them is because of their small size.

With a lot of electrical accessories I think you should go with the stock 2 battery setup. I doubt you would find a single battery with enough power small enough to fit in the factory box. I use 2 Westco Miata AGM batteries. They are slightly smaller than the originals, AGM so there is no venting or acid spill problems.

Thank you for the insight. I like the 2 miata batteries idea so I'll try that first.

I have 2 interstate batteries in my 70. 911 is in the part number. They fit perfectly. Work fine.

I did a single Optima on its side as I got tired of the preventative maintenance cleanup related to the Interstate lead acid batteries. You can see my install here:

I put my Optima battery on it's side (with the ground post in the hole).

I used a flat braided ground strap to attach to the factory ground point.

Disconnected the crossover positive lead from the battery post clamp.

I made a hold down with some pipe support strap material. Pop riveted a D ring to one end to hook the strap onto the factory hook in the back of the battery box, bent it around the battery and used the stock hold down bolt to attach the other end to the threaded point in the floor of the trunk.

Be sure to put something to cover the positive battery post to prevent an accidental short or arc.

The end sticking out looks like this:

Harry, Thanks! That was the thread I was looking for.
I never thought about placing the battery on it side!
It is spill proof after all.

Except for the acid fume issues, they are great batteries. Here is a link to the interstate battery web site: http://www.interstatebatteries.com/cs_eStore/Content.aspx?dsNav=Arpp~12,A~Part+Number,N~2147384 794-2147384771-4294493361-4294493360-2147384903,Nr~AND(P_unique_id%3a911%7cPorsche_911% 7c1973_Standard+Battery_All)
