PPI in San Francisco

Hi,

I am looking at a few cars in San Francisco. Can anyone recommend a good place for a PPI?

Thank you,

Mauricio

What are the cars? If vintage, try the stable downtown...

If you can con a lengthy test drive out of the owner, Salerno Motosports in Rocklin (a Sacramento suburb, former summer home to the Niners) is top notch. Cal for an appointment so he can move the Ferraris and Lamborghinis out of the way for an aircooled. Bring your wallet.

+1 for Salerno, They will give you the straight info. Tom Amon, Mobile Works West, has helped me and he is honest & professional ( 408-429-0545 ).

BTW: There are a few scumbag / scam operators operating in the SF Bay area ( everywhere, really ), make sure you research everyone.

S-Car-Go in Marin did one for me on an '89 targa a few years back. They do good work.

+1 for S-Car-Go. Great on both the air cooled and water cooled cars. Oh, and they are in San Rafael 20 minutes from SF.

Assuming you are referring to 911's, RMG Garage in Sunnyvale. Bob Grigsby is simply the best.

+1 for RMG. There is also The Stable in San Francisco. Although I believe that they specialize more in the early cars. (356 and 912)

Well from my perspective, the answer is... it depends. I have lived in this area for a couple of decades, all the while owning Porsches. I always recommend places that have a connection with the local PCA and/or enthusiasts.

Near the city of SF, I think SCARGO is a good place to start with a phone call. They are great folks and Porsche enthusiasts.

Near SFO, and depending on the specific car and logistics, I might try to engage Peter Smith at the dealer called Rector Porsche. Peter is a friend and fellow racer and chairs the PCA national technical committee. He took over that role a few years ago from another local enthusiast named Bruce Anderson.

From SFO on down the peninsula, I always recommend Bob and Dan and Dan at RMG. I have known Bob for quite a while and his wife for even longer as she worked in parts at Carlsen Porsche for I think 25+ years. Bob did an excellent PPI for me on a 993 some years ago. Those guys are meticulous, and quite expert. Fantastic really.

Further down in the South Bay area are Mark at Sportech who just did a PPI from a friend buying his first Porsche. And Don Wise may be another good choice. And also, depending on the car, the folks at Jerry Woods Enterprises might do this kind of work. All three of them are in Campbell.

I have lived here for a long time and have never, ever heard of Retro Sport. I guess I will have to pop in there next time in the Berkeley area and check the place out. Hopefully it is as impressive as the web site. Perhaps they focus on vintage racers and older cars, but I find it strange that I have never, ever heard of them.

I've had David Modderman (Mountainview) service my 76 turbo and various 914's over the years, including post-purchase PPI (not the best timing of course!) and have found him and his staff to be excellent. Thorough. Very Thorough.

Welcome to Modderman Service, Inc.

Even though some porsche owners hasn't heard of RETRO-SPORT
doesn't mean diddly squat..Is the guy suppose to report to you about his expertise and his whereabouts??? I've never heard of him either until I inquired
but after talking and meeting as well as seeing the "garage", that was to convince me he can built my 911 to whatever extent I want as long a money
was not an issue..If you were to find out what race cars are in his care that
are owned by prominent vintage race cars, I bet you didn't know that either!!

...race cars owned by prominent race car owners...
I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers but none of us veteran porsche
owners KNOWS EVERYTHING!!!!!! Some people are just quiet and let their
work do the talking...ahhh.. RETRO-SPORT.. If any of you want to pm me, I can tell you a shop you need to stay away from! Wouldn't you want to know who
that may be??? FYI: I've been into Porsches for 28 years now and I still
don't know everything.
