917-10 in San Diego

Out driving around the beaches in San Diego today and stopped by Grand Prix Classics in La Jolla. They had Jo Siffert's 917 Can Am Spyder there took a couple pics and hit the road, I thought it was pretty cool. They always have something in there that I want, actually it is usually everything in there! Have a great weekend

there

Was the model a 917-10 before they developed the turbo? I thought the "-10" designation started with Donahue and Penske's development and the earlier spyder versions were just 917s.

This was the first 917-10 campaigned in 1971 by Siffert. After his fatal accident Roger Penske took over development and was the "works" team, however the early Penske cars and the customer cars were still non turbo. I think the new bodied turbo was introduced in May of '72 under L&M cigarette sponsorship

great pics of a really rare and wonderful car. A mere mortal could probably drive this thing around a track - the turbo would be way too much.

What's the asking price ? $ 3.5 Mil ?

OK, got to include this picture taken at the Coronado Speed Fest a couple of years ago. The 917-30 was a nice addition to the PCA corral. If you are in town next week end you can't miss it.
