Fix Rust or Wait?
I have 2 rust areas inside my drivers door jam. I would like to have them fixed prior to upgrading to a newer 911. My body man says the vin sticker has to go.
Should I go ahead and fix the area or wait for the new owner to deal with it. I don't want to screw up the value of the car with no door jam sticker! Any opinions? |
I'm pretty sure that you can order a new VIN sticker from the dealer.
Personally, I think that a car with a documented (proper) rust repair, would be worth more than a 'project' car that needed work. I guess it depends how much you could get it repaired for. Regards, Andrew M |
Hows the song go... "rust never sleeps"....
Unless you are really strapped for funds, it only gets worse and its never good on a Pcar. Cut it out until you find fresh steel, weld new in and then coat it really good (inside and out) with something to keep it from rusting again and enjoy. Really miss my 72 but it was a rust bucket and no way to save it. Joe |
Huey..
I'm in the same boat...one spot on the outside pass door bottom and one below one headlight. The remainder of the paint is in great shape, it hasn't rusted through..YET! I'm just worried that they won't be able to get the paint color to match good enough to not stand out. Anyone know what a strip down and good paint job costs...roughly? |
Have it repaired for your own satisfaction and pride of ownership in the car. The cost of the repair will be more than the value it will add to the car.

How much will it cost to advertise? Set your price, try to sell. If the rust is a major sticking point (and on a 80's 911 I would be concerned) then have the work done and sell the car in the rust-free state you put it in, then go for your upgrade.
Remember, what you see on the outside is just a little of what you'll find when you get into it. John |
I just posted info on the S/N sticker on the thread "missing S/N Plate". I ordered the certification label for mine from the Porsche dealer 2 weeks ago for the same reason as you. I would have the rust repair done and order the new sticker as some potential buyers may shy away from the car if it was showing rust.
