Providence worth or value...

A few months ago I bought a 1970T. I had left a note on the last owners car 10 years earlier and he kept my name and number and called me in April, 6th, 2012 ( Dr Porsche died that day) to tell me I had the first chance to buy it. I bought it over the phone without looking at it due to price and known condition. I have spent the last few days putting together a history of the car and here is what I have. I have records, names, repair bills from 1971, the year it was sold. I have factory stamped delivery books with the car having 41 miles at time of sale. I have the name of the first owner who had it till 1979. I am missing names and records from 1979 to 1982 ( 17,000 miles not accounted for ) but I know the history of the person that had it during that period. He was the technical editor for some type of Porsche magazine and the car was on the cover of some magazine.

I have all records from 1987 forward to today. The man that owned it in 82-87 is now 70 and I got the chance to call him and chat today.. I also found the guy that had the car from 1987 to 1993. Full records for those years. The man I bought it from owned it from 1993 to his sale to me. He has a ledger on every expense he had with the car, to the penny. It was nice to hear how excited the people I contacted were when they knew the Porsche was still alive! None of them thought the car was still around. Every one wanted to see it and drive it again, so I am going to let them drive it and will have photos of each person that owned it from 82 to today. I also heard about many personal stories from each owner I talked with. I know having this info is good to have.. but how good is it when it comes to reselling the car? Would you pay a premium to have the records or is it just nice to have? Sorry for the long post.

Good sleuthing. The history is somewhat valuable. I probably would not pay more than 5% or 10% extra unless the history revealed that the car had race history, etc. Are you doing the detective work to add value to your sale?

yes and no on sale... I just had this big box that the owner had in the trunk and saw all this info... tracked the ex owners down and chatted with them.. all that are alive live in a 30 mile radius of me. Three of the ex-owners live in the same town. I think I should tuck it away and make sure the next guy gets it..5/ 10% is better than nothing!!! Just trying to get a feeler on where this stands with the Porsche guys on the forum.

Take a video camera with you and if the former owners are amenable, video them reliving their memories of the car and them driving it. It may not increase the value, but you couldn't beat the story!

OMG - Providence is the home of the big blue bug. Provenance is the chronological history.

Provenance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Here is the farkin' bug:

Seriously, I just learned the term last year from watching a show about a Jackson Pollack painting some lady bought at a yard sale that ended up being worth nine million dollars. Not sure if she sold it yet. She lived in a trailer. Good find, I say. She played hell getting the provenance substantiated. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/09/arts/design/09poll.html

Interesting your call came the day Ferry died. Jackson Pollack died the day before I was born in 1956.

Now you know why I have 3000 posts but add no value - nor make any friends.

Bob,
You're wrong again.
A giggle does add value.
Thanx,
