Valve Guide Problems with the SC?

Well, I decided to go for the chain tensioner upgrade - finished earlier today. When I collect my car, the mechanic tells me that there is a possibility that the valve guides will have to be redone soon. He says its usual for this to fail at abt 100 K.

Is he trying to make work for himself?
What are the signs?
Is this a common problem with the SC?

I always thought these engines were "bullet-proof".

You can find out yourself if you perform your own valve jobs. Rock the stem of the valve to determine how much "slop" exists between the stem and the guide.

Lots in the archives, so you might perform a search on this topic.

Good luck!

Is the car burning alot of oil?
more the 1qt. every 500 miles?
Alot of smoke at start up and under load?
If so he is probably right.

My 116,000 mile 3.0L blows a big cloud of blue smoke on startup, and a bigger cloud everytime I rev it to redline. So, yes, these engines do wear out.
