901 gearbox linkage question

1969 911t.
Completed rebuild of engine and am about ready to put everything back in the car but since i didnt take everything out Im not sure how things we're left.
I guess the question is when you are ready to tighten down the conical allen screw and clamp on the shift linkage does it matter which gear the trans is in relative to shifter position?I imagine it must and if so I guess I need tofigure out which gear the trans is in.
Which i can do by counting the ratio of rotations between input shaft and diff output flanges?
im probably overthinking this right?
Thank You,
Sam K

This is what I did in my 69T with a 901- After installing the transmission I moved the transmission to neutral before sliding on the coupler linkage.

With the linkage complete loose & unintstalled I slid that onto the transmission selector output shaft then moved the gear shift lever left & right until I felt that it was in a neutral or out of gear position. Then I slide the coupler onto the shaft aligning the splines then I moved the shift lever forward and backward to a neutral position then tighten everything up.

I had to do some minor adjustment after rowing through the gears (with the motor off) until it felt right but it all seems to work fine now.
