Might consider taking it to a speedo shop. Could need a rebuild. Palo Alto and North Hollywood Speedometer do good work on our cars. Call them describe the symptoms.

Try taking it out and cleaning the electrical contact surfaces...had the same issue at low speeds...had to tap the glass.....just dirty connections in my case.

If no joy, the sending unit is activated by magnets. I read a thread that recommended pulling the sending unit and cleaning the magnets with a Q-tip, and carefully reinstalling the sending unit so it can correctly interact with the magnets.

^^^ +1

I had the same problem 2 years ago and cleaning the magnets fixed it. Need to clean any scum off the sensor and the magnets which are seated in the transmission. Should be the first thing to try, and best of all its free.

At first try if it starts moving below 25 MPH if you tap the glass or knock on the top of the dash. If it does, then it's either the electrical connections or dirt build up inside of the speedo. Mine is doing it right now and is on the list for my winter projects. If tapping it doesn't help, then it might be down by the transmission.

I've got the same problem. I've just been too lazy to pull the thing out and clean it.

similar problem on '87--
when I first run the car, the first 3 miles the speedo doesn't register, then it heals itself. Don't know if mechanical or electrical--tach ok--wonder if the same issue or something different?

Get the thing shipped out to the pros for a refurb (NHW speedo) ,..especially those aged electrolytic caps within the circuit.....get a fresh calibration, as well....

BEST!
