Does anyone know of an engine management system available in the US that could run Tiago's setup and drive the coil over plug setup?

GaryR 02-18-2013 03:41 PM

I would assume Megasquirt could do that but check it out at http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html or diyautotune.com to be sure

Yes, MS can drive a COP setup. Easiest to implement is a self powered coil that just requires a routing logic trigger signal. If you choose a non-=self powered coil you need to run some type of ignitor package to amplify the power (current and voltage). MS can directly drive a coil but this puts stress on the system and limits mounting locations due to heat.

MS2 can drive 3 COPs arranged in a wasted spark setup. MS3 can drive 6 coils sequential. You can easily piggy back signals to twin plug as long as they are logic level.

Tiagio,
I just threw your engine on the "most beautiful engine" page over on Jalopnik

The Prettest Engines Of All Time

I think your engine is just about the most perfect longhood engine I've ever seen. I dream of building a similar setup.

Cheers!

Hello everyone, itīs been a while! Thanks for all the support. I have been able to put some mileage on the car, and some issues have appeared that I want to share with everyone.

As I was driving the car, sometimes it would miss and spit, and when I checked there was a coil burned out. It happened 4 times in about 4000 miles, 3 times being the coil on cylinder number 6 (the one nearest the oil cooler, a very hot spot).

Actually what burned out was not the coil itself, but the ignitor module that is built into the coils "head", it did not cope well with the very hot enviroment of the 911īs, engine bay (especially here in Brazil, a tropical place).

So, I switched to coils from the older Audi A3 1.8 Turbo, these coils only have two wires (as opposed to four on the other ones), since they donīt have the heat sensitive ignitor modules built in them.

And I installed an external ignitor module from the same brand of the EFI module, and it is working fine again. About 2000 miles ando no more misses ore burned coils.

There goes some pics, the coils are somewhat bulkier, but I think it still looks ok. I had to make new stands for them too:

I think the engine looks great trough the grille, really clean with no ignition wires and airbox:

And here goes some pics of the car, a little while ago I finally had the chance to change the signal lenses from black trim to silver trim (after more than 15 years), and it is correct at last! :)

The light was really smooth, it is in front of my parentīs house:

See ya all, best regards from Brazil!!!

Thanks for the update!

I recall your original posts. Excellent project and super nice S you have there.

daniel911T 09-22-2014 01:47 PM

Tiago,
You're my hero. This build, and how you've been kind enough to document it, are just stunning!

Can you please document what coilpacks weren't up to the heat, and which ones can take it?

Thanks!
-Dan

...Dreaming of doing the same thing...

Nice job Tiago. A very clean install.

Thank you Jim2, the car just makes me happier every year :D 911īs are such great cars... After some 30-40 years of american cars, my dad has a 79 911SC now, and after I tuned the CIS it is working like a watch, and he just couldnīt help it he loves it too much!

daniel911T, thanks a lot! it has been such a joy to drive the car without worries with the fuel now! And it is behaving great, I can mantain 0,97 lambda on warm idle (closed loop), very good considering the S cams. On a T like yours, I believe it would be a really clean and economic engine, working with lambda 1 very easily.

Well, the coils that did not cope were the Audi/VW 06B905115E (there are similar ones with a different letter at he end, like B, D, F, etc). the ones that are running now are the Audi/VW 058 905 105. These require a separate ignitor module "box" to work.

Thank you al ikosmal, it is a honor to read that!

best regards to all!

I think my rear grill color is wrong... It should be silver on a 1971 right?

silverc4s 09-25-2014 04:37 AM

Yes, black trim first appeared in 1972.

Tiago/Tecnomec 09-25-2014 04:00 PM

Thank you silverc4s!

Now, what would be the correct finish? Chrome? Anodizing?

silverc4s 09-25-2014 04:20 PM

Well the background vertical bars are black, as is the mesh. The horizontal bars are a clear anodized aluminum, like the window trim.

If you remove and strip the grille that you have using a chemical paint stripper, it will take the black off of the bars and probably leave the backing areas black anodize.

The horizontal bars are numbered, and can be removed and replaced if you are careful. That would be the way to get best results. A labor of love for sure, it is a well made piece overall.

Tiago/Tecnomec 10-02-2014 05:09 PM

Thanks a lot again, I will do that, but not for now, it will be more work, since the lid under the grille is painted black http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/a_frusty.gif

Well here is a little clip of the car on the road, accelerating while filming from the other car. Too bad my friend didnīt turn the stereo down:
