Alternator maintenance
Porsche guys and gals,
Just replaced the brushes on my 83 SC Targa, 39,500 miles. They looked worn. Had to do voltage regulator as well, one piece construction. While I have alternator out should I be lubricating bearings as well or are these sealed units? All wiring looked good. Had no electrical issues but wanted to clean up and paint alternator housing and polish fan. Alternator maintenance became a "while you're at it" job. Is there anything else I might do while housing is off engine maintenance wise? Thank you very much. Appreciate any input. Jack Kruse ![]() |

Alternator maintenance
Dear Porsche84,
Our host sells them. Because of the construction of the French 83 altertnator, the voltage regulator and brushes are in one compact unit on the rear of the alternator. Cost was about $85. My car has 39,500 and scuttlebutt around is that at 40,000 miles start looking for trouble, owing to the loads imposed on the alternator and electrical power system. Replacement was a breeze. See Waynes book 101 projects for your 911. Once you start it becomes difficult to stop looking for projects that interest you. Best of luck, Jack ![]() |
