So, just how hard is it to replace dual distributor on 964?

It's Murphy's law, Last week I was extolling the robustness of my 1991 C2 and then, BAMB!.

I believe I'm a victim of the dreaded dual distributor belt failure. I'm looking for ideas and comments on the possible remedies.

Can I replace the whole dist. with the engine in the car?

How potentially disaterous is this procedure for the home wrencher?

Where is the best source for new/rebuilt dist. or belt?

Still lov'in the P-car just need to get her up and running again!

I've heard that Steve at Rennsport is great and reasonable$ too. One bolt (metric) holds that twin-dist in. I've had my 964 twin dist out before to get that lower of the two cap off. I looked under that lower of the two dist. caps and could see the condition of the dist. belt. Getting the dist. back on in the correct firing/rotor position is really important. Since your belt has broken that lower of the two rotors is pointing perhaps to the wrong position (as a result of the belt breaking) and thus just refitting a new belt isn't the only problem you have but you also need that lower rotor positioning correctly re-established on the belt's teeth; send it to Steve.

Ditto on Steve at Rennsport. It helps if you line up everything at TDC#1, then pull the dist out. That way when you replace the dist, just line it up at #1 rotors and slide 'er in. Another critical step is properly removing and reinstalling the wires. With 12 ignition wires laying loose, it's easy to get things mixed up. I labeled mine before removing. Should be a very easy job.
