Good job on deleting the stripe, but put the stock wheels back on or a good set of track rims. Those wheels make the car look like an aerokit Carrera.

Thanks, Steve, I appreciate all input, pro & con.
The original owner painted the wheel centers gloss black which I don't care for at all. I would like to strip the black paint off and go back to the original clearcoated unpainted aluminum finish but I haven't figured out how to do that without ruining the clearcoat on the centers and (especially) the rims - and making a HUGE mess. The wheels are Champion RG5B's which are forged, fairly lightweight and are one piece wheels. I wish they weren't the "B" version with the fake bolts, but they are what they are. If I was going to replace them, it would be with a set of BBS E88's but my budget won't allow that at the moment. Here's what the RG5B's look like in stock, unpainted form. If I can't figure out a way to properly remove the black paint, I could always paint the centers Rustoleum silver metallic like I did with the Fuchs on the '87 Carrera. That paint holds up extremely well. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1375380505.jpg |
Well, here we are, 7+ years later. I still have the GT3 and it has been a wonderful experience, I'm 72 now and it will most assuredly be my last Porsche.
The GT3 has been a 99.9% trouble-free car. It now has just over 42K miles which, in the GT3 world is "high mileage". The only mechanical issue was a wonky starter at 40K miles which I removed, had it rebuilt at a local Bosch-authorized shop and reinstalled. Cost? $100. Last year my wife and I relocated from Atlanta to Kansas City, KS. The PCA Region here is great, there is a weekly Saturday morning breakfast get-together at a local restaurant. Due to COVID-19, it has been "un-sponsored until further notice" at the direction of PCA but several of us still show up. In October, the club sponsored the annual local German Car Show in downtown KC Missouri. The GT3 took second place in the "Special Porsches" class to a beautifully done Beck 904 replica and I received a nice Class Winner award which was unexpected. Yes, I miss the '87 Carrera and wish that I had been able to keep it as well, but my old geezer fixed income situation didn't allow it. A couple years ago my good friend who traded Porsches with me sold the '87 to a fellow Rennlister who had been an equally capable steward. Here is his very interesting post that covers a number of nice upgrades he has done: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1003759-finally-got-out-water.html And lastly, here is a pic of the GT3 at the aforementioned 2020 German Car Show with a couple additional photos of the event. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609604351.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609606172.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1609606285.jpg |
Jack, did your '87 happen to have beige interior at any point? I was checking out the link to the updates by the newest owner, and I was curious. I had an '87 coupe in that color that had blue dash and steering wheel, but beige seats/door panels. I sold it around 1999 and was wondering if it could have been my old car. It had Bursch exhaust and as I recall an Autothority filter/intake that I think looked a lot like the pic in that thread.

Nope, the entire interior is "Marine Blue" which was also the name of the exterior color. I had the original window sticker that indicated a Marine Blue interior.
The '87 was originally sold in Atlanta, the original owner later moved to Houston, TX and then back to Atlanta. I found it at a used import car lot in Smyrna, GA back in 2001. |
Jack, I have a 991 GT3 and I'll never go back UNLESS I could have both!. (and yes, I'm always looking.. lol..

As I mentioned in post # 63, a GT3 really is an "animal". It is a totally different driving experience than a modern standard 911 and it will bite you if you don't respect its limits. That is what makes it a blast to drive, sort of like a longhood on some serious steroids. But I do wish I could have kept the blue Carrera, too. It has an excellent caretaker now, which makes me happy. In the meantime, I still have the '69 Camaro SS that had been a restoration project that the previous owner lost interest in. It took 7 years but I finally finished it in 2019 shortly before the wife and I relocated to Kansas City. Are you still at Holt Wheels? |
Yep, still there although not as much lately. My "real " job has been crazy busy since Covid hit.. I did just bring back an 83 SC from the dead last week. (costumer car) It had been siting for 5-6 years.. So that felt good to be back in the mix..
