ssi wrench, fellow pelican in need
Help, anyone in the SE Pennsylvania/Central NJ area have one of those crazy looking SSI wrenches they would loan out? I'm needy in Langhorne,PA. Thanks, Dave, (215) 778-1573, des28h2@verizon.net

you don't really have to use that wrench to get under there. a short 12 or 13 box end works ok, one flat at a time. just gotta get the right angle of attack.

What John said. And oddly enough, the one they include with the SSI's is too small to fit the included exhaust nuts! I think I have a coupld of the "odd" wrenches in my tool box. If you don't get one loaned out to you, and still want to try one, let me know and I'll mail one out to you.

Completely OT but Langhorne brings back memories for me...in college, my summer job was playing drums in the Sesame Place brass band!
Good luck with your install. |

Hey Kurt,
What is the size of the stud on the engines? Is this a 6 mm stud with a 12 or 13 mm nut? I keep hearing people talk about a copper coated nut for exhaust and getting ready to start looking for them and want to have the right thing. Thx, Joe A

Been awhile Joe and I will have to look at the wrenches. As I recall, they were shipping the SSI's with a 12 mm wrench and the nut was 13 mm. Maybe they have corrected the problem. This was a few years back.

In times past, the 12 mm copper clad was all there was. The 13s started showing up. The 12mm with the snap on 1/4 drive will pass through the allen section of the heat boxes. If there is too much stud, I keep a few 12 mm nuts around.

Bruce,
Any idea the size on these studs? Assuming 8 mm but are they 1.0 or 1.25? Thx, Joe

Its an 8mm x 1.25 with either an outside of 12mm (BMW) or 13 mm (Porsches) as I find out since I was short and went to the BMW dealership or was it vice versa.

The box end 12/13 from my Lada work the best for the one that were hard to reach. BTW for the OP or future search, there is no &%$#@^ way that you could take the nuts off of a old fitted heat exchanger with the tool that comes with the SSIs ![]()

Oh oh... we got one of those "Post Repeating Troller" among us that would not know the difference between a spark plug and a dipstick (self-portrait depiction of the PRT)...

I use an assortment of 1/4" Snap-On
the 12mm & 13mm swivel are shorter than other brands and that becomes helpful I also use nickel anti-seize. Routine auto parts silver may not last very long on the 1st SSI install I took an extra couple minutes to make sure mounting to head flanges were straight and then that exhausts were level enough

Thanx all for your help and offers. 1/2 a stand up box empty under the car, 3 tripps out to try something else, and several "motherf#$ker's" later, I got'em. Left side out for 02 sensor bung weld. Next weekend we put it all back together.
