Play in the rear wheels
Hi Friends,
Yesterday, I started hearing a clunking noise like if something was hitting the frame of the car when I accelerate. It does it only once, just when the torque is applied to the wheels. Once stopped, I moved my rear wheels back and forth, and could feel some play. I can only feel it if the parking break is on. This tells me that it is not related to the CV joints (the wheels do not spin, they just move back and forth with the suspension). It feels like if there was some play somewhere in the suspension, maybe the sway bar ? Hint : I recently replaced the shocks, but they are ok, no play. If someone has any idea of what it could be, I`d be glad. ![]() Aurel 78 SC'Targa |

My wheels rotate perhaps an inch, with the part brake on. I've wondered about this. But the wheels do not move in any other direction.

Superman,
Does it make a noise like a `klunk` in the drivetrain when you rotate the wheel back and forth with the parking brake on? Mine also moves about 1 inch, maybe less, and in no other direction. I had not noticed that before, but maybe my car always did it. I checked my sway bar, there is no play in it. I`d like to know if all SC's do that, it would take my worries away for good ! Thanks Aurel 78 SC Targa |

Yes. When I raise the rear and apply the park brake, both wheels are able to turn easily an inch or less, ending with a clunk at either end. They have always done this, but I'd like to look into it. At any rate, it does not seem to be a problem and is not unusual, apparently. As long as your rear wheels do not move in other directions as well (wobbling, etc).

My 70t does the same thing. It may be the design of the parking brake asssembly mounts.
