Steering wheel questions/opinions

I have a 78 sc, and I absolutely hate the steering wheel. I plan on changing it so my questions are, what diameter do most of you use? extensions or eccentric mounts? Im also running racing style seats, do any of you recommend a quick release?

Momo Prototipo 350mm very popular.

+1 on Momo Prototipo 350mm if you don't mind a smaller diameter steering wheel. The only problem with it is since its smaller you don't see the gauges as its suppose to be seen. Photo below is the level how I view my gauges with the Prototipo.

suggestions:

if you are tall a deep dish and/or spacers are almost essential. plus if you do AX or DE then you want the wheel closer than you might want on the street

a quick release is only really necessary if you have, or plan on, a full cage. if you go with a quick release you need to figure out a horn switch

never tried an eccentric, i just lowered the column instead

I use a Momo with the extended hub. I have a 3-spoke from an '84 that has the extended hub, and I am going to go that way, so the Momo will be up for sale sometime soon.

I like the way it feels, and even though it obscures the gauges more than the stock wheel, the feel is so nice that it's worth it.

I do like the three-spoke one just a hair better. It really is kind of a toss-up.

But the Momo wheel and extended hub are very nice.

Here's mine...370mm with Momo hub and Fuchs center cap horn button.

Some blocking occurs so I'm looking into the JWest Eccentric hub extension from our host ( Pelican Parts - Product Information: JWST-ECC-AL)

+1 on Momo Prototipo 350mm. Spesh if you are tall.

Mount iphone with KM/h reading on it (tomtom) so you know how fast you are going. You cant see speedo with the small wheel as demonstrated in post 3.

My favorite is the Momo Corse. Thumb cutouts in the proper place. I find it far more comfortable, both street and track, than the Prototipo.

Prototipo , on my own , needs a spacer to have the hands less closer from the dashboard.


I choose OMP wheels , less expensive than Sparco or Oreca or Momo, for the same quality and design.

OMP & Sparco & Momo have the same bolting on the hub.

Choosing a Momo hub is the best way , perfect fitting and the horn is saved.

Many of us turn or tilt the speedo so more of the range is in view. Sorry I don't have a pic handy at the moment.

FYI - If you look hard you can find older Momo Prototipos in 360 mm, 370 mm and very rare 380 mm sizes. I had a newer 350 mm Prototipo and while I love the look and feel, I could not see the gauges. I swapped it out for an older 370 mm which resolved the problem for me. Your mileage may vary.

The factory offered an extended steering wheel (a little over an inch). The extension bolts on to the steering wheel but only a matched wheel, you can't use it on a standard factory steering wheel.

I have an '86 Carrera. Will the Prototipo with the standard Momo adapter result in the steering wheel being in the same position relative to the dash as the stock wheel is?

Same here. I use a 350 Momo, with the excentric adapter. It moves the wheel higher AND further away from the dash, works really nice. Also gives you a little more room for your knee.

with the eccentric adapter -- isn't it weird to turn the wheel so that the axis of rotation isn't in the center of the wheel?

I like the idea of the eccentric adapter but would have to try or see one first.

Here is pic of adapter installed in my car. I do not notice the eccentric aspect. I do notice the extra room I have between my legs and the wheel and Also I do not hit the turn lever with my hand when I do hard quick turns.
