Last nights story of sucess & humorous thoughts of failure, an American novel
I got the thermo-time switch installed last night and pulled all the plugs to clean & regap them. I am now at .042" gap (remember this is with MSD 6AL. This was MSD's rec due to the low compression when not on boost. Anyway I got the little lady all buttoned up and she runs like a dream. Starts great and everything.
Begin humor. I pull out of the driveway for a test drive @ about 11:00 P.M.and head toward a buddies house to get her up to temp. Turn around when I'm at 185* or so and give her a good run thru the gears. Pulling very hard and I am impressed then BOOM rattle, pop pop bang boom. Sweet mary what have I done? I limp to a parking lot where she dies . I slowly get out of the car and lay down behind her to pick up the rod bolts and crank pieces that have surely launched thru the case. Nothing? No oil, not pretty pieces , nothing. Ok, in the engine compartment I will surely see the carnage. Nothing, everything looks fine, whats that? A wide open vacuum port on the intake(the big 1/2" one)? How, Oh yea at one bar of boost my intake launched the vacuum plug into orbit. I start to feel better but can hardly believe this would cause it to barely run. I start it up and while see is gasping and sputtering I run back and plug the port with my finger, I thought it might suck me in finger first, and she smooths out immediatley. I remembered that I had dropped one of those covers in the back of the engine so a fishing I go and believe it or not I actually found it. Put the "spare" on and bingo she runs beautiful. I never would have believed a vacuum loss would cause that much turmoil. I can not tell you how happy I was to remove thoughts of rod thru case from my mind. The only down side is the throwout bearing is making a ruckous again, but more on that later. Daddy is happy and he took her into work today. Life is good.

What was the problem that caused the running on 3 cylinders a few days ago?
Good to hear that you seem to be 'over the hurdle' with some of the problems you were having. Regards,

Thank God that thing is running...now maybe we can get some work done around here.
By the way, the tool room tells me you have the Makita cordless drill at home again...maybe we should relocate the business next door to your house. We would be closer to you and OUR TOOLS! |

Actually I found it was running on 2 cylinders, 1 & 6 to be exact. I fouled the plugs thru my combination of too large a gap and repeated starts without CSV operation etc. She purrs like a kitten now!

One problem with the stupid CIS system is that when you have any air leak the CIS becomes even stupider because you loose metered air.
