G50 oil leak question

I have had a few drops of oil coming from the front of the of the trans over the last few years or so and the other day I took the car out for a long drive and then parked it in the garage and then the next day I looked under the car and there was a puddle of transmission oil about 8in in diameter. The trans was too oily to find where it was coming from so I cleaned it up and then took it for another drive came back and let it set for about a week. I then looked to see if it was leaking and only a few drops. It appears to be coming from the seal BTW front cover and trans. I checked inside the shifter boot and it is dry. My question is does any one have any idea why it would leak so much one day and only a few drops the next. If it turns out to be that gasket how hard is it to remove that cover and replace it. I have looked in the forum but unable to find out how this is done. I am not a wrench by any means but I have done valve adjustments, replaced CV boots, removed engine form my 356 several times and a few other things but I don't know any thing about transmissions. I would appreciate any useful help. Thanks Don
