wipers of Windshield of the 911 on the right ???

Hellow friends !!

When I see pics of anthers 911's I see more cars with the wipers of the Windshield stooped on the right stance !!

And my question is, have anybody the DIY or the tip for make this upgrade ???

I think is better for the driver not have the wipers on his front !!!

And... there's a WAY easy way, too.. You can remove the clock and tach, and reach in there from that side, and get it done quickly. Search this forum for instructions on that way, too.

I have mine parked on the right because I like it that way. There are arguments though, that the factory set them on the drivers side so that if a big splash covers your windshield, you can immediately hit the wipers on and clean it off.

I live in New Mexico, so not much big splashing going on here... ha.ha..

Lots of rain in Oregon, I like mine on the left as the factory intended.

Some additional tips. Go in through the gauges (disconnect the battery first, to be safe) to reach the wiper arm bracket rather than disconnecting and removing all the gear from the rear of the front trunk and under the cowl. Don't drop the bracket nut or the star washer (or is it a wavy washer?). One or possibly both wiper arms will have to be re-angled somewhat. Test the reversal with the wipers retracted back (off the windshield), so that if something's awry, no damage happens.

This is fairly thoroughly discussed in other threads.

Good luck!

Brian

I'm in Oregon too, and I vastly prefer them on the right. In my case when they park on the left they threw water right in my path of vision on every return sweep. The intermittent settings were useless to me because of that. Now that everything is reversed, that no longer happens.

Every one's preferences (and car) is different however, so YMMV.

As an aside, I strongly suspect that Porsche really "intended" them to park on the right for LHD cars all along, but changed due to changes in US regulations. Note that pre-68 LHD 911's and 912's all parked on the right from the beginning. I know that there were lots of regulation changes implemented for the 1968 model year, such as the obvious ban on glass-covered headlights. But I also know that there were some changes in swept area and pattern for the wipers in '68 as well, as that's when MGs and Jags suddenly started coming with three wipers instead of two. So I suspect the change in the side they park may have been imposed by our government, not a factory preference.

Does that mean RoW models park on the right? Or Porsche decided to standardize on doing it one way? Just curious.

Hint: Do not operate the wipers with the hood open. The two may not mix.

My Uk SC wipers park on the right, straight in front of the driver. Quite weird as every other right hand drive car parks the wipers on the left to maximise the swept area for the driver.

My ex Japan LHD car has wipers that park on the left , in a country where like me they drive on the left. That's confusing for some!

The splash/first wipe makes perfect sense for those of us that drive in the rain on rough roads where other vehicles are present.

A Californian boulevard , hmmm, probably wipers don't ever get used! Sad that by law you have to carry the extra weight! (Along with all that smog stuff etc...)

As for visibility , I'm average height and don't exactly have a problem seeing over the front.

I always liked those Merc wipers that met in the middle , and overlapped - unlike the Morris Minors. Wonder what the logic was there???

Other than what has already been mentioned in this thread, are there any other disadvantages to having the wipers park on the right on a 911?

I am asking because I drove my car quite a bit in the rain over the past month, & it was somewhat annoying when I turned the wipers off & it left an "arc" of water on the left side, right in my line of sight. I am thinking it wouldn't happen if they parked on the right. But I don't want to switch them if there is some negative consequence that I haven't thought of.

Thanks.

Here a thread on the 993 wipers that has some good points why they are in front of the driver. Some of these apply to the earlier cars as well.

993 wiper position

Only short guys have a problem with the wipers in their field of view!

Or tall guys that have dropped the seat height so they can clear their helmets on the roll cage....

I did the park on the right modification and more...

I completely removed the right wiper system linkage portion and re-made a new crank arm for the wiper motor so the left wiper now rotates further (increased degrees of motion) and functions as the only wiper.

That's exactly why I did it. I do drive mine in the rain, fairly regularly. I've not encountered any downsides.

I switched the wipers over to the right earlier this year. When I first used them I didn't like that more of the lower part of the window on the drivers side didn't get wiped. Now that I've gotten used to that change I'm glad that I switched them over.
As was mentioned earlier the wipe line thru the drivers line of sight is not left there, important on intermittent mode. Plus not having them there in front of the driver in the dry is really nice, and that is most of the time. Even on the Garden Island.

Cheers Richard
