which brand and model tire to buy for a novice

I need tires badly and im having a hard time figuring out which tires to buy. Of course I want excellent handling but have read that its better to learn on hard compound tires to learn the caracteristics of the 911 since they are so different from front engine cars. Im getting frustrated while looking at the hundreds+ of options. I would love to get away with spending less than $130.00 each but would spend more for an ideal tire. These are the specs from my car.
1969 911
Front rim 16x6 fuchs
Rear rim 16x7 fuchs
Rear torsion 28mm hollow
Front torsion 19mm solid
Complete suspension front and rear includeing brakes from an 86` carrera
Cars weight aprox 2200 lbs
175 hp
Driver(me) just got drivers license back so agressive driving experience is none.

there are recent threads talking up the AVS intermediates, which are a good deal and below your budget. I'd say go for them. Also Kumho 712's seem popular but I have no experience with them.

Kurt? It's the weekend, with many people out on family things, etc. Only us die-hard (polite description...maybe I should say home bound?) types are on now. I haven't a clue with the wheels you listed. But try again on Tuesday...when these guys are supposed to be "working", but are here instead. My guess is you'll get some pretty good responses then.

You must be new here, the tires Reg mentioned are excellent choices for the money, I might add to the list Bridgstone RE730's
I find them to be an outstanding tire for the money ! be sure to check Tirerack.com.... best place to buy !

tire rack is clearing out yokohama avs intermediates. i just got my 205/55/16 for $60 and the rears 225/50/16 for $62. they came to $280 shipped. i cant believe how predictable these tires make the car. even if it steps out they make it very easy to pull it back in
these tires are very sticky and are very stiff but the ride is fine, and you can't beat tireracks price on them

If you want the best grip buy a set of DOT track tires like the AO32R yokohama.

If you drive your car say 3-4 k miles a year I am sure they'd last you. You would just be buying a set every year.

Comparing these track tires with street tires is like driving a VW Golf, then driving a 911.

There is no substitute. Just expect to spend 800 a year on a set, vs 400 every two years on street tires. Your brakes will last you longer, as you will not be using them so much. Your car will be on rails!

you'll like them, even if they wear out in a year you can't beat the price.
check your wheels for scratches prior to taking them to get mounted, i have a scratch in one of my rears which i didn't think was there, but it could've been being my fuchs aren't perfect cosmetically.
