'73 paint colors on paintscratch.com
PaintScratch.com shows the following standard colors for 73 911s -->
Guard Red Light Yellow Irish Green Black Blue Metallic Clearcoat Is this right? and how many cars had non-standard colors? I thought Guard Red wasn't available until later. Also, does anyone have a picture of a car in Phoenix Red? |
Bill,
There were 9 standard colors in '72/'73 ... and they got ONE right, Light Yellow!!! Irish Green and Black were optional colors, as was Blue Metallic. All metallic shades were clearcoated from way back, but only two-part catalyzed clear coat was used from 1974 on. Guards Red did not even show up on the charts until 1981, though the '027' code was available from '74 thru '80 as India Red ('74 and '75 models) or Indian Red thru the end of 1980 production models! Many 2.7 and SC people are evidently mistaken about what their red shades were called when their cars were built! |
FWIW, the paint code sticker under the boot in my Guards Red Carrera says "Indischrot." According to a German colleague, this translates to "India Red." I believe they are two different names for the same color!

Warren - any chance you could list the 9 standard colors for 72/73?
I've been told my car is GOLF Blue (it's a deep royal blue) but have only heard of GULF Blue - would this be a light pale blue as used on the factory Gulf Oils liveried 917s ? The color plate in the door pillar is inconclusive as it has been defaced. Regards Pete Quote:

FWIW, Paintscratch.com listed my '75 Sahara Beige as "Desert Beige", but since the paint code matched, I tried it, and it is a perfect match. Also, although the web site says you need to buy the clearcoat along with the paint, I suspect for a '73 you don't need to... I tried ordering it for my car, and later on they gave me a credit for it and said that it is neither needed nor recommended for my '75 color.
Good luck! |
their paints do require clearcoat---at least the ones I order do. they're very flat paints, which is good. You sand them with 400 grit after you paint and then clear coat and buff.
