912e turbo type IV, possible?
Posted this on the 912bbs site. Wanted your thoughts.
Surely this has been explored before but I haven't found the answers I seek. How does one do this or why would it be a no? As much of a believer in originality as I am, my car has been bastardized enough that the funds to return it to stock would please me more being spent to make it go faster. I have faster cars but I'd like this one to go faster, even just a little, 50 more HP or so and I don't want to spend $10k on a MassIVe. The odometer had stopped at 170k and the motor has already been rebuilt 2x, most recently in 1991 and only 20k miles since then. It now has dual weber Idf 40s. Thoughts! |
There is a very elaborate 912E (type 4) turbo that has been partially done, photo documented. Not sure if this project ever made it to the street.

Sammyg2 has done a turbo to a Type IV engine. He used a single side draft carb if I recall.
He has pics and will give a description if you ask nice. His answer won't pass smog if you are in CA, since the 76 is still subject to inspection. Seeing you have dual carbs already.....probably not an issue. His was a 914 but same engine..... |
As the owner of a 69 912 with a Type IV engine mated to a 71 911T gearbox---that couldn't pull the skin off a dead bananna from a standing start yet cruises at 70 like a BMW 3 series.......This is what I've contemplated:
Subaru EG33 Powered Porsche 911SC - PRECISION CHASSIS* WORKS Go price the 3.3 SVX engines on ebay---less than $1,000. Apparently the sand rail guys love them and you'll find vendors offering the exhaust parts, the ECU wiring and the ECU's themselves. That being said, I'd have a really hard time cutting up a real 912E knowing it is one of 2097 cars ever built. |
I don't plan on cutting anything other than eventually removing the flares and returning it to stock, eventually. It' s #46 in the production line.
Currently looking for a deal on a type 4 motor that's been built out. |
He's pricey but Jake Raby does good work. Google 'Massive Type IV'.....
