Import Duty to the UK
Gentlemen
I have used this board for a couple of years now and, to be honest, wondered what I did before it existed! Now I feel it's payback time! Whilst my '88 has been the paragon of reliability I need things like exhaust, Heat Exchangers etc. and wish, if possible to buy from our hosts. Costs are competitive, shipping costs I can handle but I am unsure how much I will get 'stung' by customs when they arrive. Anyone had experience of this or know the UK rates? Thanks

oh yes!
i did the same early on. bought all my parts from pelican. you're gonna get clobbered by vat 17.5% for starters (which on its own isn't too bad), but then you add the duties (and the amount depends on what you buy). basically i add 50% to the cost of the item (inc vat). (and i have experienced charges as high as this on some items). with the shipping charges of large, heavy, items, IMHO it just ain't worth it ![]() i only consider buying smaller, cheap parts now. sorry wayne! i hope to make a trip to the states soon and i'll smuggle stuff back!! ![]()

If you can get Wayne to write Happy Birthday on the packaging and send the paperwork separately you might get away without paying any extras.

The birthday thing doesn't work here in "stasi" Denmark. However the seller could *ahem* "accidently" write you a wrong invoice with a much lower price... I think I know someone who did that when buying an air intake in the US

Roy, you will get charged import duty on the total (declared) value including the shipping cost, then VAT on top of this total (including the import duty) & finally a clearing fee (typically £5-£10) charged by the post office/Parcelforce/DHL etc.
As stated above, these costs mean that it will work out more expensive in most cases than buying items over here. I have bought hundreds of parts (both new & secondhand)ranging from hood crests to carbs/manifolds/linkages & it's perfectly possible to avoid or minimise import costs when buying used parts by getting the seller to 'downgrade' the declared value but as I'm sure you'll appreciate, sellers of new spares are not usually prepared to do this.
