Vibration at 2700 RPM

I have a stock 1984 carrera. I have recently noticed a vibration especially pronounced at 2700 RPM. It goes away at 3000 and does not come on until 2500. It does this with the clutch in or out, in gear or not in gear. I have not tried this at a standstill yet, but as far as i can tell all speeds have it. any clues at to where to start?

thanks in advance

So what happens sitting in the driveway with the car in neutral. First I would guess you have to figure out if it is engine or drivetrain. Post your answer and we can go from there.
