Unhappy Where will it be leaking? Kinda long

PLEASE HELP

Ok my engine is leaking. And I am going to use the dye in the next few days to find out where. But help me guess
History-I rinsed the engine then drove it for half an hour. The top is dry, the drivers side is dry too, the passenger side is wet and there is a 3" puddle under the car on that side. It is directly under the oil tank. But the S hose and the oil tank etc are all wet too. The whole side of the engine and inner wheel well so I don't think it is as easy as the drain plug.

The engine was leaking a little last week but not as much, when I checked the oil is was down so I added (3 litres) It was half way between the marks warm afterwards. So it is not overfilled.

I am thinking that the oil tank is leaking from near the top somewhere and running down and spraying eveywhere while I drive.

Any other bets??

Shawn

Shauwn, if it's bad enough that it creates a spray pattern across the are it should be easy to find.
You might want to try to make a day out of it without the expensive dye, I'd save that for the cramped locations that are nearly impossible to get to.
You could put the car on four jackstands in the early a.m. and wash the underside thoroughly (raincoat, goggles etc)and by noon it could be ready to go. Startup and crawl under?
Sorry I don't have any better advice. Good luck.

Not sure about your '77, but my '83 sprung a BIG leak like yours at the oil level sensor. The cork gasket between the sender and the tank was hard and brittle, so I just made a new one out of 1/16" silicon rubber sheet, and sealed it with Permatex Ultra Blue.

No leaks after 1 year.....

Good idea about the waiting but I am kinda lucky. My brother-in-law is a mechanic at a local franchise shop. We can use his bay and the dye for FREE

I know this should be relatively easy to find, since it is quite a larga leak. But I have already replaced most of the seals etc mentioned in Wayne's book, I am missing something somewhere.

Shawn, Does your car have an external oil cooler system? If not, it could be the "hard oil line" (actually these are a combination of a rubber and a hard metal line) between the oil tank and the engine. On my '76 this line was leaking at the swaged joint at the juncture of the rubber and metal sections and the oil was weeping out and then being blown back and all over the lower passenger side of the engine. Apparently, the rubber shrinks over time and the swage can not follow the shrinkage and the joint leaks. Besides a new oil line another fix is to carefully cut off the swage collar using a Dremel tool and then securing the loose hose end with a hose clamp. A better fix would be to cut off the swage collars at both ends and install a new piece of hot oil rated rubber hose. Cheers, Jim

Al that sounds like a GREAT possibility I will watch for that.

Jim yes mine has the front loop cooler, i will also watch that and fix it up.

Great ideas, keep them coming. I probably won't be doing this until tommorrrow
