Bringing in a car from Canada

Anybody have experience bringing in a car from Canada to the US ? The car I purchased a 68 911 that was originally a US car but now has a Canadian title. The seller will be arranging transport delivering it to me but asked I check out what issues he may encounter when bringing the car across the boarder.

Thanks
Joe

Hoo boy this is probably something you should've checked out first. From my limited experience, it's MUCH easier getting a car into Canada from the US than vice-versa. It differs state to state, but some states can be a nightmare. At least, though, it's easier with older cars.

Start here: Importing a Motor Vehicle into the U.S.

You shouldn't have any problem with that vintage. Documentation of the car's US origin would always help.

Joe, I did this years ago, no problem, had the owner drive his car across the border,to my house, I inspected I, gave him payment, drove the car to register it in Newark nj, and put him on a plane back to toronto. Easy

Normal everyday procedure. Have all your papers bill of sale and title in hand.
Fill out the forms if they give them to you ..epa dot and just check the box "25 years old or older." exempt! except for a 2.5 percent customs duty. Keep the paper as your state will want them for itle and registration purposes. Good luck and have fun. (Sonett43s method is an easy way but if the state asks for the import papers you could be in hot water.)

I have done it and its not that big of a deal, especially on something that age. If they require an importer, email me and will send you the info of the firm that did mine.

Go to the customs web side and read up. Print the part where it says no vehicle tax is paid on a re-import into the US. The customs dude was unaware of this when I did this back in April but I was prepared and had the info printed from their web site. He just signed off on the paperwork after verifying that the car indeed originated from the US.

It also helps if you call the Customs at the port of entry where you are coming in and chat with them beforehand. I did this and it really helped.
