Mark,
Pls post a picture if you have one, easier to keep an eye out if you have a image in your mind. Also, whats the serial number? Hope you get it back, lost one bike and 911 like this... never saw them again. Joe

Mark,
I would really think of getting a good inspection on the car before you accept it back. Would hope that the insurance company would pay for it but what would happen if they hot rodded it and the motor puked in a week? Glad you got it back and you might want to put a kill switch on it if its not garaged. I did a while back and while it does not sit outside often, I still sleep better! Joe

Hello,
Thanks for all the replies and concern! The same officer found it several hours after I reported it stolen. When someone across town reported their Toyota missing, my car turned up parked next to where the Toyota had been. Seems the thieves switched cars in the morning and went on their way. No witnesses. The only apparent damage is to the ignition (drilled) and gear shift knob and a stolen top cover. ***"I would really think of getting a good inspection on the car before you accept it back. Would hope that the insurance company would pay for it but what would happen if they hot rodded it and the motor puked in a week?"*** - Good point. I did sign for it's release from the police but the car is at my mechanics now for inspection (and service). Insurance adjuster is due to come out later Tuesday or Wednesday (AAA). Hopefully insurance will cover any mechanical damage these jackasses may have caused. May be hard to prove though? - Kill switch is a good idea too. Thanks again, Mark |

I very often grab my RED fuel pump relay from the front trunk, if I'm not 100% comfortable with the area in which the car is parked...

Mark,
One thing that I do not like in California (the list is rather long but will not get into that here) is that in many cases the insurance company may insist on a salvage title on any car that has been stolen, to take the liability off of them in the future. This could be the kiss of death on your car as far as future valuation is concerned, so pls be on the outlook for anything like this happening. Good luck and hope it works out for the best! Joe

Correct me if I am wrong, but, didn't all USA SC's have the factory alarm/theft prevention unit? It does a VERY good job of disabling the cars when the control unit fails ... is that all they are good for?
The insurance can't 'cause' a salvage title to be forced on you unless you accept their offer/settlement and they get the title as part of a 'totaled' declaration! The damage here in this case doesn't sound more that $2-3K or so for the top and ignition switch/rekey job replacement ...

I have done the the remove-the-fuel-pump-relay-in-the-bad-neighborhood thing. My favorite was the guy in a old thread on this topic that made a timed fuel cutoff. I don't remember the exact details, but if you started the car without properly disableing it, after a few minutes it would cut power to the fuel pump relay and the gas guage, so it would show empty. His car did get stolen, and they caught the bad guys pushing it toward a gas station. Tom |

Most US SCs do not have any kind of factory alarm.

My 85 has the key in the drivers door and honks the horn when opened too far but does it do anything else? I assumed that it was a "passive" alarm and just did the horn.

Joe,
I have never read an owner's manual explanation of how and what the alarm is supposed to do ... and the '72 - '83 factory service manual is EXTREMELY VAGUE as far as explanation or circuit description! However, my research in trying to figure out what could happen to the SC circuitry ... including the Bentley manual ... leads me to belive that once the alarm is armed and triggered, the car won't run at all!

Warren,
Now you have me curious! I have guests over later tonight but tomorrow may pull the power from the horns (so my neighbors are not pissed at me while I do this) and see if the car will start with the alarm enabled. I was just assuming that it was a "dumb" alarm and just made noise, as I, like yourself, could not find much about it in the books. Will report back... Joe

Joe,
It doesn't use the main pair of horns ... there is a separate, dedicated alarm horn up above the spash shield in the vicinity of the steering rack and fuel pump! I will credit the factory engineers as having done a very good job of putting everything associated with the factory alarm in very hard to get at locations ... it wouldn't be possible to get to them in under a half-hour!
