911 Trailer Hitch/Rod Holders!

Hello All,

I have recently completed a sturdy trailer hitch for my 88 911 which i now use to tow a tire trailer to track events. this fabrication/design was hugely helped by Joe Bob on this forum. The key is to replace bumper shocks with steel 2x2 bolted to the frame. i will post details later for those interested.

today i was searching for another solution to another "addiction " i have in addition to P cars ...fishing... Note easy transport of rods on bumper with simple clamped on holder.. eliminates messy rods sticking out of sunroof ..and turns heads at even the most demure beachside resorts....

just trying to "give back" to this great community..

cheers Frank

Hah! I love it. I'm going out for bluefin and yellowtail on a three-day trip out of San Diego next week. If I didn't have the Cayenne S, I'd be calling you for one of those.

Frank, I'd be interested in seeing the details about a tire trailer hitch. Cool idea with the rod holders, now you have to the front and get another four rods!

wow. what an ingenius little contraption!
but is this the only way to get a tow bar on a 911?
i wanted to get one fitted so i could put a bike rack on the back, but i dunno how i feel about taking the rear bumper off everytime i wanna take a bike somewhere...

I have a similar hitch, but welded to the frame inboard of the bumber shocks, with the cross bar hidden in the bumper cavity. There is a small square hole cut in the bumper behind the licence plate. To attach the hitch, raise the licence plate, insert the hitch, and reach up between the muffler and bumper to insert the retaining pin. Works best with a cool muffler. When not in use, the plate covers the hole and all looks stock.

The pics show the installation, with a newer shot that shows the bumper hole better. I've been towing a tire trailer to the track for years this way. No reason it wouldn't work for a bike rack as well. You just need a talented welder/fabricator (not me - I can't take the credit).

Mike

Nicely done.....looks like the frame has been trimmed and assume it was done with the motor out?

With my muff configuration....it's a no go for me.

It was done with only a bumper and muffler drop as far as I know.

That is pretty cool, I have been looking for something like this so I can use a hitch mounted bike rack on my Cab.

mnez: that is a very crafty set up you have. Kind of something like I want to use. Totally concealable.

Mine was made by a crafty welder near Ottawa, Ontario. It wasn't his first, there are a few of us running around. I would think a good fabricator who is familiar with 911's could duplicate it.

I've also seen bolt in ones used, one mounted to the bumper shocks and was sold here a while back, and I know it worked well.
F/S 911 trailer hitch

I've occasionally seen other bolt-in ones, but don't know where they mounted.

Essentailly they are all custom made.

See more pics below:

I removed the oil from the bumper shocks and welded them solid, I then TIG welded 1/2 plates to the back of the bumper to attach the shocks.

Picture 3 shows the receiver, this was attached vertically to the inside of the bumper. I cut a hole in the underside of the bumper to accept the ball mount (pic 5).

I use a pin (pic 4) through the center of the license plate to lock the receiver and mount (you make this out in my previous post)

I use this hitch with a small trailer to lug my track wheels and tool box to DE's

Thx, Stu

Are you still using the oil filled bumper shock?

I tried that.....didn't like my results and went with the 2 inch square tubing. It's amazing how much fabrication time you have with a snow storm raging outside.

But then a again I wasn't reattaching a steel bumper back to the rear.

That oil is nasty stuff, isn't it?
