Is the Bentley manual useful for a 76?
 

Anyone use the Bentley manual that covers 78 and up for a 76? I'm most interested in the brakes and front end. The go for about $100 so I don't want to shell out the cash if it won't help me out with the brakes and front end. Thanks.

The basic systems only differ in the power booster for the 78. All the front end pieces are similar. I would buy it for the usefulness of reference.

Far from it! They have tons of errors. One that nearly took out my crank pulley and possibly the nose of my crank was the crank pulley bolt torque. It was nearly half the torque the bolt calls for.

+1. I use the factory manuals. None of the aftermarket manuals are worth buying.

They all got mistakes even 101 Project Book.

I got 3 sources and when they all agree, its pretty safe.

Some publisher openly admit and publish them, but I ran into one that push his 3rd edition by stating that mistake have been corrected but will not list them independently :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Well if you want to spend $1000 on 3-ring binders, then OK.

I make do with the Bentley for the SC/Carrera, the factory specs book, the 101 projects book, and this Forum

Torque specs that are not too critical and not listed are done sensibly according to fastener size.

It takes some experience to get to that level, but hell, experience is what we all need.

I have a 76 and have leaned heavily on the Bentley along the process of the 3 year restoration I'm just finishing. So to answer your original question... yeah, it's quite helpful even though the cover says 78 on up. Just use some common sense and don't spend all afternoon looking for a brake booster or something just because the manual shows one in the picture.

Truth be told, I have learned more from the forums here than any other resource I had access to. A lot more.

JJ911SC's recommendation "Porsche 911 1970-1977" has turned out to be quite useful for me. I just did the brakes using it as a guide and I was amazed how easy changing the pads is on these cars. Usually everything is harder with my 911 than on ordinary cars but this time the Porsche engineers made it simple. I would not have known how simple changing brake pads is without this book.

I don't have a grand in my set, even though I bought them new. You can buy them used from time to time for a lot less.

The factory books, and the service training books that go along with them (available on eBay for $15-20 each) are the best source of info. I understand people want to save a buck but there were too many errors in the other books. I've owned them all and sold off all but the factory stuff.

If you had a 928, I'd make you a real good deal on an unused 7 volume factory set, for example.
