Quantity in oil level gauge?

Newby question from a three-year owner:

What's the quantity of oil between the red zone and top white line on the oil level gauge?

And yes, I always rely on the dipstick for the true quantity. Sorry if this has been covered before...I did search.

Thanks!

Well, it should correspond closely with your dip stick. However, many people's seem to vary. Mine is bang on with the stick which relates to about 1.75 litres from top line and bottom on the gauge (and stick).

I like to run my oil level around the half way mark. Near the top and it just gets used quickly. In the middle and it stays there for a long time.

Mine (89) is weird,..but in a good, repeatable way:

Conditions: at temp,..with ALL thermostats open (including the front cooler lines),..level ground (duh),....the gauge will show just shy of max,..then VERY LINEARLY track the level from there. I'm able to watch any changes in tank level over time,..add accordingly-which isn't often at all. Guess I'll have to correlate the lower hash mark on this gauge with what the stick reads..then determine amounts used (or leaked).

I would assume a normally working gauge would do the same, yet starting at mid-level.

I've never removed the sender but plan to revisit some great threads here on the rework of that assembly,..will get a new one, if necc'y. ...as well, all the gauges will be sent off for rework (to include this one). I could rework them electronically but don't have fresh faceplates, needles, etc. like NHS would. SO: OFF, they go!

I kinda' like the way mine works,..but should she need to correlate with the stick (that is, mid stick=mid gauge/needle position), I'm up for installing new hardware on the sending side.

BEST!

Doyle

I seem to be one of the lucky ones. While idling at operating temp on level ground, my gauge reads exactly the same as my dip stick.

Mine also. Uncannily accurate.

mine is 2 qrts.
many people dont care for this gauge, i love it. the oil level is not that critical that you have to pull the dip stick to check it, besides, i never fill mine to the full line anyway. seems to use it faster when i do. when it drops to the red line, i drop in another qrt.

just did a 1000 mile trip to the mountains. oil level was around mid range.

I like mine too, but as I noted above, mine is accurate. I probably would feel it was a waste of space if it didn't work reasonably well.
