Post 911 manual

Is it worth the investment of $200+or- for a service manual for the 911? Do they show a great deal of detail? Or are they just for the experienced mechanic?

it depends on how much work you plan to do yourself. i have purchased all 911 manuals through the '89 model (1/2 new, 1/2 off manual (used), bruce andersoninternet used), a bentley manual for 89's (new), a haynes manual (new), a chilton 's book (new), AND printed tons of stuff from the Pelican site.

sounds like a lot of dough (it was), but i did this so if a problem cropped up, i would have the reference material at my fingertips to attempt to solve it. actually, i spend tons of time working on my '73 and very little time on my '89.

i believe i have paid for the books in saving trips to expensive porsche mechanics. if you don't plan to work on the cars, i would not spend the money .....OR.....perhaps would only buy a bentley manual.

If you plan to rebuild an engine, then the 1st set, Volumes 1 & 2, is mandatory. Not only are they more complete than the later sets, but written better and with a bit more attention to how things are done, rather than ... here's the pictures, you figure the puzzle out yourself!

I've had a good look at my new Factory manual set. I'd say they are definite overkill for a guy who will never do anything more than change the oil.

On the other hand, there is no other source for the kind of detailed information that's in the Factory books. For accurate details and procedures, the Factory manuals have Bentley beat. I guess what you buy depends how deep you're going to go into your car.

There are one or two crooks out there who are Porsche mechanics. By studying the manuals and knowing what the problems are, and how long a job should take, helps keep these guys honest.
