Do our cars have anti-chip coating on any panels?

Looks like the inner wheel arches and some other parts of the under side received this at the factory. Thinking about having the lower part of the front bumper done, and maybe the sill covers.

Thoughts?

The pan under the front bumper gets the rock guard as well as the bottom half of the skirts behind the rear wheel.

The sills do not have the rock guard but I see no reason why they couldn't. Make sure you don't rock guard the channel that long rubber strip goes into. I had to heat that strip up with hot water and use KY (glycerin would have been better) to get it back in.

I have used a product called Gravi-tex. You mix the black and white Gravitex to get a hue that is close to that of your car. Not the same color - just the darkness of it. Then chips won't show as much. You need a schutz gun to spray it to get the pebble finish.

I think Pelican has aerosol cans of the Wurth shutz product and others here know which type to get as there are more than one. I think the undercoating is different than the rock/chip guard.

I thought the rocker covers did have "rock guard", along with the other parts mentioned, as well as the bottom part of the rear valance.

Of course, it probably depends on the year of your car.

My 70S has original undercoating coming up the rockers and ends about two inches up from the bottom. Essentially its hidden underneath the aluminum rocker trim. I imagine all of the early tubs got this so, for the early T's you would see more of it unless the car came with "S" Trim.

I think you are right, Todd.

My car does not have it on the rockers but I painted it in 2003 and I must have just skipped the rock guard by mistake.

Porsche added more of the stone guard material as time went on. So, an '84 would have had this material in places that a '74 wouldn't, for example. It's useful in the sense that if you get enough on a panel, a chip won't usually progress to a rusty spot. You'll still see the chip, though, and it's more work to repaint a panel with this stuff.

I wouldn't put it on the underside of a bumper.
