Oil Cooler Pipes are Evil - MUST Be Destroyed!

Got a quick question that I need some help with… I’ve got an ’86 911 with a front mount oil cooler. I am doing some custom work on the front end and really need to either move the oil cooler away from the front (not the side either) or somehow reroute the hard oil lines that go through the passenger side fender well. What are my options here? I would prefer to find an option where I can keep the oil cooler in the front and just do something different with the oil lines.

Can I reroute the oil lines underneath the car? Do they need to be hard oil lines or is there a flexible line that I can use with hot oil? My AC has been removed, so I was thinking of running flexible oil lines along the route the AC lines used to follow into the smuggler’s box. Then I could either re-route them out the front through the trunk or do some custom ducting and bring the oil cooler into the front trunk.

Am I just better off rigging up a rear mount oil cooler with an electric fan?

Thoughts?

The flexable lines are big in diameter and need to be big. Theyre bigger than a/c lines and I imagine wouldn't fit there. You might be able to fit a cooler in the fenderwell in front of the rear wheels? And in the rear behind the driver side wheel. What is your problem with the hard lines?

The oil lines do not go through (as in a wall) anything. The lines now travel under the car.

Here is a pic from the parts catalog. The arrow points to a five or six foot run that is shortened in the diagram but definitely goes under the car.

Maybe just a little more explaining can help. A pic or drawing of your plan will help a lot.

Yes - I am pretty sure flexi lines are available.

The oil lines do go under the car until they hit the front fender well, then they go up the inside of the fender and across the top before coming back down again in the front corner (near the horns). It's these lines in the front fender that I am looking to re-route. It's for a project that all of you will laugh at, so I am embarassed to share the exact reason, but it is these lines that I want to try to get rid of.

I will look more closely at the rear tonight. I do have those funky turbo flares in the rear with huge vents in them (like an IROC RSR). Unfortunately I've already had to cut the vents down twice to clear my wheels, so I can't really mount a cooler to get air directly from those vents as there is limited room.

Sounds like you need a flex hose with a way to cut-off and tie into - even if the flex hose goes over the river and through the woods - the copper pipe running under the car. I bet you can do that with some guidance. I don't know the answer but I know some peeps.

Here is a picture of the evil oil cooler lines.

The rest of the front of the car is pretty clean, except for the front mount oil cooler. Shame, it is the best place to put it. I just wish I could clean it up more.

Sure would be cool to have it cleaner, like this:

I checked, and I do have room for an oil cooler on the driver's side rear wheel well, in the back part. It's close to the exhaust and cat though...

Remember...the lines help in cooling because they hang out in the air flow.
If you route them inboard...you will vent heat into that area.
Your driver's compartment can become an oven!!
Best idea I have come up with is to allow air to flow through the rocker panels to help disipate the heat.
Elephant's new lines are finned to help even more.

The 930S Flat nose models had the extra oil cooler in the rear fenderwell. The Cayenne Turbo has a very large & thin Oil Cooler that you might consider running under the belly as some A/C condensers have been mounted.

I can make up almost any Metric oil hose or line you may need............

This is a set of Hoses I made up for a Porsche 906 that was recently shown at the Pebble Beach Concours. Lots of possibilities. I can even send you fittings to modify your existing hard lines.

You can mock-up your system out of garden hose or I can send you loose hose & fittings for you to route as needed then hose-clamp them in position. You then send them back to me for final crimping. The only extra cost is the shipping.

Heres are a few custom made-to-order hoses & fittings I have done recently.....

Please NO PM's. Email me w any questions.
