tach removal ?

Can the tachometer on 911 ('87) come out without removing the steering wheel or entire column? I can push the tach out (through speedo opening), but I cant figure out a way to get it all the way out. seems the steering column/wheel is in the way. can I get it out all the way by just removing the steering column cover (plastic housing cover)? I have a 3-spoke Porsche steering wheel. I think it is std size. or will I need to take off the wheel and all?

Thanks.

I've had the tach out of my '80 SC about five times now. I didn't have to remove my 3 spoke wheel. Your Carrera could be different from an SC, but I doubt it.

I'm waiting for the answer myself. I looked at mine the other day and it looks like - at the very least - the plastic housing around the column will need to come off. Anyone? -- Curt

I leave the plastic shroud on the steering column. Just pull it straight out, then to the right until you can rotate it around enough to remove the wires.

tach removal

I changed my guage faces to white. Manuevered to tach out, but had to remove steering wheel to get it back in. Sorry for the news, but it's no biggy. Pull the center horn pad off, unplug the wire from the horn pad, turn wheels straight forward, remove nut that holds the wheel on (24mm I think). Asseble in reverse. Good luck.

i just rotated my tach and encountered the same problem. don't think that you can get the tach all the way out without the removal of the steering column. sad but true. so i guess that changing the lights in the instruments in my 88 carrera is going to be much more invovled than i originally expected.

thanks!! I'll try the column plastic cover first, take it from there. not sure how to "pop" the steering wheel cover off but I'll take it slow if necessary. I HAVE to clean out the inside of the tach glass. it's looking terrible and will fog up often. I think the gunk adds to the fogging (like a dirty window). wonder why some get dirty inside and others are clean. I thought about rotating the tach too. what is the "official" 12 o'clock setting? beginning of redline? or rpm at peak of torque chart? middle of redline?

Why, I attempted this job last night and concluded the wheel must come off and probably the lever assembly housings as well. This is a job for daylight hours, though no biggie.

How in the world is Rob getting his out without removing anything? Maybe the early cars are different (71). It looks to me like I could pull my tach straight out only about 1/2 inch, then it would hit the column housing. -- Curt

I guess my car is special. I've had my tach out no less than five times in the past three months replacing light bulbs and trying to get the the needle to stop bouncing. It just pulls right out without removing the stock three spoke wheel or the shroud on the column.

Sure is strange how cars that are both earlier and later than mine are unable to do this.

Rob,

I don't know what kind of mojo you have, but I either hit the underside of my dash cover, or the steering wheel.

Had to take off the wheel to get at the gauge (the "club" method worked great for whomever put it up here)

Once off though, you might start thinking of a new steering wheel...

I'm in the same camp as Rob - when i had my troiuble with the broken mounts a few weeks ago, I went behind the tach to check the shear bolts. Getting it out was no problem, though it was infinitely easier to do without the wheel in the way. Removing the steering wheel is such a simple operation (now that I've got the 27mm socket and extender) that I did it for the convenience.

Wayne-
thanks for reply but that article doesnt seem to cover removal of horn cover on 911. I have 87 911 with a 3-spoke Porsche wheel. I dont think it was original b/c I think they wee 4 spoke but I do think it's a Porsche wheel perhaps. I'll try to attach a pic

You are correct - its not a stock 87 wheel.

I'm another one who gets mine out WITHOUT removing the steering wheel -3 spoke steering wheel- 77 Car

But Removing the wheel is easy enough so do what you need.
