Talking NYC here we come! (Not even close to being Porsche related)

Just in case some didn't notice this in the other thread...

I'll be in NYC (Holiday Inn at JFK) from the 9th 'til the 23rd for the UN Summit.
We actually are going to have a rental car, and I should be able to snagg it when ever I want.

I have Roninlb's number in my cell phone so he will be my link to the board.

I hope we can hook up for a drink somewhere!

I'd be in, and I think a couple of other guys chimed in as well. I've been to a couple of meets with some guys on the Rennlist board, but it's mostly 944's that show up to those. It'll be cool to see some 911s.

Let me know where and when.

Porsche Crest Metro NYC Activities

Leland,

On behalf of my fellow New Yorkers, welcome!

May I suggest that you join us for the Great Marques Concours, which is out at Old Westbury Gardens, on September 15th, and at a Metro NY PCA Autocross on September 22nd. Details on both can be found at www.metronypca.org.

These should be fun events, and with some coordination, a few of the 'Heads could meet up there! I will definitely be shaking out my '71 race car at the Autocross-- look for #806 and I will introduce you to the world of MFI, whereupon you will abdicate your leadership of the SCWDP and renounce CIS forever!

Have a great trip.

Leland -
I've e-mailed you my contact info, so when you're in town, feel free to get in touch. My office is just a few blocks from the UN and right next to Grand Central, so getting together during the week ought to be easy.

I was going to add a Turbo World Domination Plot comment to the end of the e-mail, but it'd be nonsensical-- you don't "Plot" to maintain dominance.

Safe travels.

I'm not close enought to attend, but have spent some time in the city.

Someone in the other thread mentioned McSorleys. I would strongly concur.

What a great bar. Good beer brought to you a handful at a time - and the cracker platter - MMMMM one of my favorites. A man's kind of place.

It is not to everyones taste - but from what I know of Lee - he would probably enjoy it.

Then maybe to the Peculiar Pub? Etc, Etc.

Have fun.

Porsche Crest McSorley's Old Ale House

Well, now you are talking. I happen to be a self-styled ambassador of the place, and in my opinion, there is no finer establishment in New York City. Established 1854, and changed very little since then, but for the collection of a century and a half of human flotsam that has washed up on its walls-- how about artifacts ranging from a pair of manacles from Andersonville prison, to wishbones hung on the gaslight stanchion to commemorate McSorley's patrons who fought in The Great War, to a newspaper from the day the Titanic sank. Two kinds of ale, light and dark, sawdust on the floors and a surly bar staff that will slam down ten lights on the antique tables, sloshing beer on the unsuspecting. Some of my finest hours have been spent there, whether in triumph or despair, and I recommend it without hesitation.

So, Leland, send me a private message and copy Overpaid Slacker, we'll get some cigars and meet you there!

one thing is that is incredibly cool about McSorleys is that Abraham Lincoln gave a speech about a block away ( at Cooper Union) Abes talk was quite significant.

if you think about it his speech had a lot to do with how we became the country we are now.

I wonder if Abe stopped in at McSorleys and enjoyed a frosty one?

John?

Porsche Crest Lincoln

Tim,

An interesting historical point! I'll bet that Mr. Lincoln stopped across the street and slammed a few, and was probably a huge fan of the saltines, onions and cheese! And a big fan of the mustard.

There are only two pieces of history that support this: in 1902, Old John McSorley put up portraits of Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley, with a placard reading "THEY ASSASINATED THESE GOOD MEN THE SKULKING DOGS." It has since been replaced by a modern one with Lincoln, Kennedy and MLK in the back room near the fireplace.

And, this speech you are talking about, the famous "Right Makes Might" speech he delivered in the basement of the Cooper Union, across the street, on February 27, 1860. So long-winded that he MUST have had a few beers afterwards. Over 1500 people were in attendance that day-- and at least SOME of them must have stopped in.

See, its not just drinking, it's living history!
