How do I check my tranny fluid level on a 915 transmission? Do I need a lift?

Do you need a lift? Depends how big your belly is...but ramps would certainly help. If you have access to a pit, that would work, too.

You check the fluid level by removing the fill plug and sticking your finger in it. Fluid level should be even with the hole.

Make sure the car is relatively level when you put it on ramps, jack it up, etc...

On level ground, raise the driver side, place jack stands for safety.

Crack open the fill bolt, be very carefull as not to damage it, once removed lower her then roll and bounce her to take the pre-load off the struts.

Check to see if you get a drip out the fill hole, if so you level is good, if not fill with same type/brand gear lube while on the ground and until you see it dripping out slowly.

Raise her back up then torque her up.

That's it.

Changing the gear lube is the same process but you drain it, make sure the fill bolt can be removed before removing the drain bolt.

If your going to jack up the car to check the oil you should also change the oil.You will need a 17mm hex adapter on the end of a 1/2" breaker bar if the plugs were as tight as on my 84 Carrera-they were very tight.Use a hand pump that can be bought at the auto parts store to fill 3 litres or quarts if your one of our American friends.Before reinstalling the drain and fill clean the grit from the magnets and put some teflon pipe dope on the clean threads and tighten the plugs firmly but not too tight.
