Used the oil dye- Found my leaks
This is a follow up from this post
Oil dyes? Use them or NO?? So I used the dye and found 4 leaks ![]() The one from by the pulley I already knew about and will fix one day I hope. The other three were on the oil line that goes from the left side of the engine and ends up at the thermostat in the wheel well http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/1974-75/1-6-1.JPG # 15 and #16. It is leaking at both ends of #15 where they connect. These I will just tighten when I get a 36mm wrench . The other leak is on #16 where the hard metal is crimped to the material part. I will have to take this to a shop and have it fixed. So good news really! Shawn

Shawn,
It would be a good idea to remove the #15 line completely and clean both ends thoroughly before trying to tighten them ... since you are planning to remove #16 anyway. An industrial hose/hydraulic shop should be able to remove the existing crimps, replace the hose, and put new crimp rings on ... for a leak-free hose repair. You may want to scribe an orientation mark on one metal line (not the crimp ring) and then along the hose with a ruler/straightedge to the other metal line, and take pics to help in correct reassembly. You don't want the hose ends to change their relationship in ANY way! Congrats on finding the leaks!

Thanks Warren I will scribe them as you said. I honestly never even thought about that, looks like I have WAY more to learn still

I didn't even know such a dye existed - I've had my first 911 for 9 months now, and hence my first slightly oily engine!!!!
So you can buy this stuff from any good motor shop? Any brands you could recommend? Cheers World cup start today!!!!!!! Come on England!!!!!!

yeah shawn, do tell. Did you have to clean vigorously first or was it the kind of thing that you just throw in and shine light and your done?
I have always thought of doing this but have not due to equal parts of laziness and fear that there is some giant problem that will need to be addressed (ignorance is bliss). Anyway, give us some details. Cost? Joe 68 L |

Just call around to your local car parts stores. Not everyone has it, but most "hard core" parts places will (i.e. it won't be at Pep Boys, but will be at the places where you find pro mechanics picking stuff up).
Its usually around $6 per bottle. You need a black light, too. |

My brother in law is an apprentice mechanic so I am really lucky, he has access to a hoist and has WAY more tools than me.
We put the car on the hoist sprayed it clean with a pressure washer then used the air hose to dry it all (I only had to do the bottom and right side of the engine.) We even took the right rear tire off. After it was clean we put the dye in. It came in a small sealed package, probably about 2 tablespoons? Then we ran the engine. So the car is on the hoist engine running and I used a UV light (wear the protective glasses) With the UV light this dye turns a neon green colour. It took about 3 minutes for the leaks to show up and I let it run for about 10 looking for any others. The package says for "Proffesional use only" but I am sure you can get it, just don't know where? If you need it and can't find it, I can try to get some for you, but you'll still need the light. This stuff is GREAT like Jim said Thanks everyone Shawn
