Got my new piston but now I have a question
 

For those that don't remember, while putting my engine back together I dropped a piston and cracked the skirt. I ordered a replacement from EBS. I just got it in today and and cleaned it up here is what I found

**What I have currently
78 911sc Euro 3.0

**On the cylinder (Mahle) I have the following stamped
1 and a 5 in a triangle

**The cracked piston is a Mahle
On the underside it has the following markings

Mahle 37 28/8 C011 93L7++

On the top of the piston it has
The Number 1 stamped and the Letter E

**The replacement piston is also a Mahle

On the underside it has the following markings
Mahle 36 40/7 C021 93L7+

On the top of the piston it has
The Number 0 stamped and the Letter E

The Question is are these two pistons interchangeable? Or do I need to call EBS and have them exchange it?

the piston stamped 1 is up to 100th of a mm. larger across the skirt than the 0 piston. not a big deal. compare the weights and the skirt measurements and if it's basically the same, use it.

What is the max allowable difference in size and weight

I put the replacement piston into the cylinder with out rings and it had some play. Is that ok?

How do you suggest I way them?

weigh it on a scale of course. maybe your local auto machine shop has one. 7g is max., right on is better. 1/100 of a mm is nothing, basically. they all need some skirt clearance. compare with a micrometer. this is why it's hard to do these jobs at home. no tools.

Tools are good.
When combined with "touch", they become useful.
I have no idea what brought this on....
