I need some help on getting some measurement numbers.
I have a 1977 911S (Ca. car). I want to check the dwell angle and ignition timing. I want to run some numbers by you and see if they are the right ones for my car? I can not make out the numbers on the timing pulley. I think they are Z, 5, & 35? Can anyone please tell me what they should be for a California car. They are very hard to read. Ignition timing: 15 degrees at 1000 rpm? I do not think I have 15 on the pulley? I do not know what the ignition timing should be for 6000 rpm. Could someone please let me know what this should be for Ca. 911S. My understanding is that checking the timing at 6000 is very important. Dwell angle: 38 degrees Contract breaker gap: .35mm This will be my first time checking these items on the car. If you have any helpful tips, I want to thank you in advance for your help. P.S. I do not have any emblems with data on them in the engine area. Last edited by maui44; 09-04-2012 at 08:40 PM.. |

I'm quite sure 1977 2.7 has mag pick up, no dwell or points.

My 76, very similar to 77, has distributor with points. Gap to .012 inch. Dwell 38 degrees plus or minus 3. To check the dwell, use the wire from the distributor not at the coil. At idle the timing is retarded 5 degrees. Advanced 35 degrees at 4K rpm. Z is TDC. That's what the three marks are for. Use some colored nail polish or white paint to highlight these marks on the crank pulley.
